1 writing in your own words
Paraphrasing writing in your own words

2 A paraphrase is… Your own interpretation of essential information and ideas expressed by someone else, yet presented in a new form. One legitimate way (when accompanied by accurate documentation) to borrow from a source. A more detailed restatement than a summary; focuses on a single main idea.

3 Paraphrasing is a valuable skill because…
It helps you control the temptation to quote too much. The mental process required for successful paraphrasing helps you to grasp the full meaning of the original source.

4 Six Steps to Effective Paraphrasing
Reread the original passage until you understand its full meaning. Set the original aside, then write your paraphrase on a note card/notes. Jot down a few words below your paraphrase to remind you later how you envision using this material. At the top of the note card/notes, write a key word or phrase to indicate the subject of your paraphrase.

5 Steps to Effective Paraphrasing
Check your interpretation with the original to make sure that your version accurately expresses all the essential information in a new form. Use quotation marks to identify any unique term or phraseology you have borrowed exactly from the source. Record the source (including the page) on your note card/notes so that you can cite it easily if you decide to incorporate the material into your paper.

6 Paraphrasing Exercises
Using a piece of notebook paper, paraphrase the following nursery rhymes in your own words.

7 Humpty Dumpty sat on a wall;
Humpty Dumpty had a great fall. All the King's horses And all the King's men Couldn't  put Humpty together again!

8 Jack Be Nimble Jack, be nimble, Jack, be quick, Jack, jump over The candlestick.

9 This Little Piggy This little piggy went to market,
This little piggy stayed home, This little piggy had roast beef, This little piggy had none, And this little piggy cried, Wee, wee, wee, all the way home.
