In my language arts class, I am conducting an I-Search which is a project where I find out about a topic I’m interested in. I chose the topic of _______________________, and I would like the opportunity to ask you questions about this topic. Are you available for a phone interview or an interview?

A phrase is two or more words that do not contain the subject- verb pair necessary to form a clause. Phrases can be very short or quite long. Here are two examples: a. Washed with soap and water b. Crunching caramel corn for the entire three-hour long movie last Friday night

Read and reread the text until you have a good understanding of the main idea and the details. Put the text away and write down what you remember without looking at the text Compare the original with the paraphrase: Does it have the same meaning? Did you leave out any essential details? Do you use too many exact words?

Circle all of the words that are repeated in the original and your paraphrase. Are there any you could change? If words are general and unnecessary to switch (for example: wall, or sit) then don’t worry about switching them. If there is a phrase that is either too difficult to translate or just really well-written as is, use quotation marks within your paraphrase. However, these should be used sparingly. Names do not have to be changed.

With your partner, decide whether the passage is acceptably paraphrased or if it is plagiarized. If you think it is plagiarized, write an acceptable paraphrase of the passage.

With your partner, read and paraphrase your assigned paragraph about the Super Bowl and chicken wings. Remember to cite the author if you use a direct quote in your paraphrasing. Your paraphrase will be put to the “Google” test to see if you plagiarised.

These samples are from the same passage as yesterday; however, the attempt at paraphrasing is different. Check to see if proper citation has been given. Are there quotation marks around parts of the passage that take at least three words directly from the original? Do you know WHO said it? Do you know what source was used? Do you know the page number?

Take out your I-Search notes and the paraphrasing guidelines you wrote yesterday. Paraphrase one of your notes. Show it to a partner for feedback. Show it to the teacher for feedback
