Unit 2 Culture Shock

Teaching Objection: 1. Train students reading skills by using Strategy One: To guess the meaning of the unfamiliar words according to 1) the previous sentence, 2) the following sentence, 3) the punctuation marks (common, dash, parentheses etc.). 2. Finish Unit 2

Time Arrangement: 90 minutes 5 minutes’ reading for word pretest and then check the choices. 15 minutes’ reading for Text I and Reading Comprehension. 30 minutes for the detail of Text I. 15 minutes’ reading for Section B. 25 minutes for Text II.

Teaching Steps Five minutes’ reading for word pretest and then check the choices. Fifteen minutes’ reading for Text I and Reading Comprehension.

Questions and Answers to check if the students understand the text. What is culture shock? How to put it into Chinese? It is a condition of confusion and anxiety affecting a person suddenly exposed to an alien culture (外 国文化 ) or milieu (环境). 文化震惊 / 休克:某人突然身处异族文化或环境中而经 受的一种困惑焦虑的状况。 Or: When a person is in some foreign country he feels puzzled and he is not used to the life there. He feels very uncomfortable. And he doesn’t know how to deal with the new environment. That may be called culture shock.
