The Computer Systems Research Program CSR Mohamed G. Gouda Program Director March 2012

Computer Networks and Systems (CNS) Division The CNS division, whose director is Keith Marzullo, is the largest division in the CISE directorate in the NSF CNS is the home of two important core programs: – Computer Systems Research (CSR) – Networking Technology and Systems (NeTS) CNS is also the home of two important cross-cutting programs: – Secure and Trustworthy Cyberspace (SaTC) – Cyber Physical Systems (CPS)

Areas Covered by the CSR program Computer Architecture Programming Languages and Compilers Operating Systems Parallel and Distributed Systems Middleware and Runtime Tools Embedded, Hybrid, and Real-time Systems Sensor, Wireless, and Mobile Systems Keith Marzullo 2010: CSR is a catch-all-proposal program

Four Featured Areas of CSR in 2011 In 2011, the program directors of CSR decided to name four areas of interest in the new program solicitation of CSR – Cloud Computing – Embedded and Hybrid Systems – Pervasive Systems – Computing Energy and Sustainability In 2012, – 30% of CSR-submitted proposals deal with Cloud Computing – 30% of CSR-submitted proposals deal with Computing Energy and Sustainability

Number of CSR-Submitted Proposals In 2009, the area of Cyber Physical Systems (CPS) was removed from the CSR program and became an independent program, bigger than CSR So in 2010, the number of CSR-submitted proposals was reduced to about 300+ But by 2012, the number of CSR-submitted proposals was increased by 30%, over their number in 2010, to about 450 proposals The CSR program keeps on re-inventing itself

Classes of CSR-Submitted Proposals in 2012 CAREER (50 proposals) Medium (65 proposals) Large (25 proposals) Small (280 proposals) Others (30 proposals) NSF Solicitation
