MCKENZIE MAY Chapter 9 Group Project

Setting Places  Maycomb, Alabama  School  Finch residence  Finch’s Landing Time  Christmas Atmosphere  Quite tense when conflicts occur “Jem and I viewed Christmas with mixed feelings.” “Finch’s landing consisted of 366 steps down a high bluff and ending in a jetty”

Imagery Example: When scout was describing Finch’s Landing. “A two rut road ran from the riverside and vanished among the dark trees.” Explanation: This example gives you a descript vision of how Finch’s landing looks. Why the author included this element: I think Harper Lee included this element because she wanted you to be able to envision in your head what Scout was seeing.

Theme Theme: Listen to the whole of things before making rash decisions. Example: Scout got mad at Francis for calling Atticus a shameful word and beat him up. Her Uncle Jack didn’t understand Scout’s reasoning for punishing Francis in that manner so he spanked Scout. Atticus later explained the way children worked and that you must listen to the whole story first. Why the author included this element: I think Harper Lee included this element because she was trying to make a point of listening what people have to say before judging them.

Foreshadowing Example: When Scout was angry at Francis she stated that “When stalking one’s prey, it’s best to take one’s time.” Explanation: This leads you to believe Scout is planning her revenge towards Francis by making him fear her, for he doesn’t know when she will get him back. Why the author included this element: I think Harper lee included this element because she wanted the audience to ponder what Scout would do.

Symbolism Example: When Scout starts spouting off different profanities. Explanation: This spontaneous profanity stage symbolizes that Scout is trying to attract attention. Why the author included this element: I think Harper Lee included this element because she wanted the readers to know that Scout isn’t getting enough attention.

Characterization Example: When Scout describes Francis. “He was a year older than I, and I avoided him on principle: he enjoyed everything I disapproved of, and disliked my ingenious diversions.” Explanation: This example shows that Francis and Scout don’t like each other and definitely do not get along well. Why the author included this element: I think Harper Lee included this element because she wanted to show that there is conflict between the two characters.
