Titles Title Statement and Variant Titles

Title Statement – MARC tag 245 Identifies the resource, including the title proper, other titles, numbering, part titles, and statement of responsibility

Definitions n Title proper: The title minus other title information, numbering, or part title n Part title: Name of part or section of a work n Other title information u Subtitle--Information used to qualify a title (often smaller font, not as prominent) u Parallel title--The title proper in another language u Alternative title--Usually follows the word “or” and found in books published before the 20th century

Where do you look? n AACR: Chief source of information u Differs depending on format F Books—title page or title page substitute if there’s no title page (cover, caption, colophon, etc.) F Sound recordings—disc or cassette label, then container, etc. F Videorecordings—credit frames, then container, etc. n RDA: Preferred source, or the part of the item that provides the most complete information

What if there’s no title on the chief source? n Take the title from somewhere else on the item, or from another source n Record the title in brackets, and include a note to indicate source of the title $a[Henderson family history]. 500 _ _ $aTitle from book jacket.

What if there’s no title? Cataloger provides a title and records it in brackets $a[Ballerina teddy bear]. 500 _ _ $aTitle supplied by cataloger.

MARC coding—tag 245 n MARC tag 245 is not repeatable, but some subfields are n Indicator 1 u 0 – if there is no 1XX field u 1 – if 1XX field is present n Indicator 2 – Nonfiling characters u 0 – no nonfiling characters (i.e., title does not start with an initial article) u 1-9 – number of nonfiling characters F Code as appropriate if title starts with initial article, including titles in another language

International Standard Bibliographic Description (ISBD) Punctuation u Punctuation that precedes some subfields or ends a field— used to separate elements of description u Prescribed punctuation F Colon before subtitle F Equals sign before parallel title F Slash before statement of responsibility F Period before numbering F Period or comma before part title F Ending punctuation

Recording the title n Transcribe title as it appears on the source u AACR exceptions: F Only first word and proper nouns are capitalized (this may vary depending on language of title) F Some punctuation is substituted u RDA F May enter capitalization as in AACR, or may transcribe as it appears on the source F Transcribe punctuation as on the source

Recording the title--punctuation u Punctuation can be transcribed from the title page or added if needed for clarity u AACR--Exceptions are … which should be replaced with -- and [ ] which should be replaced with ( ) u RDA--Transcribe all punctuation exactly as it appears

Variant Title – MARC tag 246 Varying forms of title associated with the item, whether or not the title is on the item. Use if a title differs substantially from the title statement in field 245 and if it contributes to further identification of the item. Also use for tracing a portion of the title. (Excerpt from OCLC bibliographic formats and standards— bold added)
