CINDY MCMULLEN, J.D., BOARD MEMBER LINDA DRAKE, DIRECTOR OF RESEARCH NOVEMBER 2014 Making the Most of CTE Course Equivalency

Course Equivalency Law (RCW 28A and RCW 28A ) Districts are required to have a policy for course equivalencies. Boards of directors must approve AP computer science courses as equivalent to high school mathematics or science. CTE courses that are equivalent shall be accepted as core requirements, including graduation requirements, if the course is transcribed as the equivalent course. A certificate recording the student’s successful completion of the CTE course becomes part of the student’s High School and Beyond Plan. Washington State Board of Education

E2SSB 6552: CTE Course Equivalency Washington State Board of Education OSPI shall develop a list of CTE courses that are equivalent to science or mathematics courses. The content of the courses must be aligned with standards. OSPI shall submit the list of equivalent courses and their curriculum frameworks to the SBE for review, an opportunity for public comment, and approval. Districts must provide the opportunity to access at least one mathematics or one science equivalent course from the list. Districts with fewer than 2,000 students may apply to the SBE for a waiver from these provisions.
