Approaching Tomorrow ……….Today

 December the announcement was made that CTAE was creating 2 new program areas: Culinary Arts Education  Pathways for each of these program areas are listed in your handout.  The new program areas will stay as part of the responsibility of the FACS program specialist.

 Some CHANGE – along with all the other CTAE program areas, as well as academic areas.

 Why? One of the biggest reasons is to improve the graduation rate in GA, in 2005, Georgia ranked #49 in the nation for 9 th graders graduating from high school in 4 years. The state percentage was 56%.  Georgia must keep these students in school and ensure they have been educated with the knowledge and skills to proceed to the world of work, or post secondary education.

New Curriculum  With added rigor for all program areas, and identification of corresponding academic GPS.

Where are the curriculum frameworks for other courses not revised in phase 2:

The curriculum from phase 3, that has just been revised and waiting on approval, will be posted on the DOE website in late March or April, for public comment and review.

 GPS training for all phase 2 pathways: Nutrition & Food Science Feb. 6th Culinary Arts Feb. 20th Early Childhood Education Feb. 22nd Teaching & Education Feb. 14th Register online at the CTAE RN.

 Certifications For Teachers. With all the new pathways that are being created, the DOE is working closely with the PSC to ensure teachers are appropriately trained in the subject matter they will be teaching. Culinary Arts is an example of an area FACS teachers may be teaching, yet do not have all the skills or education to teach the new standards.

 American Culinary Federation will be the certifying industry partner for the Culinary pathways.  NAEYC & GAYC will be the certifying industry partners for Early Childhood Education.  Industry Certification Application Grants will be available this spring for these 2 program areas.

 We are beginning to work on Industry Certification for the remainder of our pathways. The key is for our pathways to be recognized by Business and Industry as meeting their standards in preparation for post secondary education or a career/job in that field.  Some pathways may be a little harder than others to do this with – but if you will look at the Bridges Bill on your table, you will see industry certification may determine if you receive state funding for that program – so we must ensure all our new pathways are applicable to be certified.

 The Culinary Equipment list has been updated, thanks to David Ross, and new prices are reflected in the list. We have also added a modified equipment list for any system that wants to renovate an existing lab into a Culinary Arts Lab.

 Early Childhood Education labs will see a new updated version that will include an observation booth. The existing lab is still acceptable for IC.  FACS lab, once all the FACS pathways have been approved, we will take a closer look at updating the FACS lab and equipment. As we work on IC for Interiors, and Nutrition pathways, these both requiring specific equipment, we will incorporate those items to the new plan.

The CTAE Resource Network will be a link of communication : Sign up for Workshops & Conferences View workshops and conferences you have attended and which ones you received PLU’s for. DOE / FCCLA link to send you emails. Your access to complete your Program of Work / Monthly Report

 PLU’s will be granted for this conference if you follow the guidelines on the green paper.  Lesson plans must be submitted to me at the DOE.  Rosters will be give to me to verify who attended those sessions that asked for a PLU.

 Same location, but hopefully EVERYTHING you need to linked to one page:  Curriculum, facilities, equipment, suggested textbooks, course numbers, etc.  Additional resources that would be helpful we will also link to this page.

 French Culinary Exchange Program

 There is new legislation being proposed to address the graduation rate. A copy is in your handouts. Take a close look at the following:  1. No Mention of FACS – we are in all areas you say, but if that is the case – then who needs FACS – why not just concentrate on the areas listed. We can no longer be “jacks of all trades and masters of nothing.” That is why we have not been included. We must focus on what is needed most, what we do best, and CHANGE to bring back our exposure and notice. If we don’t, we will be lost.  Take this home and read the proposal.
