Information Day on Embedded Systems - Call 5 Jens Schumacher The Product Avatar Concept as a Platform for Networked Embedded Systems Presentation of a Proposed IP for IST Call Embedded Systems Jens Schumacher University of Bremen

Information Day on Embedded Systems - Call 5 Jens Schumacher IP Vision To realise secure, swarming and fault-tolerant Networked Embedded Systems by applying the Product Avatar concept: –Autonomous, intelligent entities self-organising in an ambient environment –Implementation and evaluation of applied Product Avatar concept in select, concrete industrial cases to realise the Intelligent Product paradigm –Industrial take-up of concept on the basis of Open Source Product Avatar models and architecture

Information Day on Embedded Systems - Call 5 Jens Schumacher Smart Dust + simple Sensors: Smart Tags + Sensors Smart Dust + simple Sensors: Temperature, Humidity, Air pressure, Etc. Can-BUS access Automatic System Diagnostics Positioning Proximity detection Safety sensors Simple diagnostics # of revolutions Humidity Air pressureTemperature Mobile Access Sensor aggregation Seamless roaming Event-triggered transmission Sensor history Smart Tags etc. for Perception & Control

Information Day on Embedded Systems - Call 5 Jens Schumacher System Architecture RFID, AmI, Mobile Networks Physical Resource or Product Resource or Product Avatar RFID Sensors Reasoning / Agents …CRMERPPDM Ontologies Task Mgmt Physical Resource or Product Resource or Product Avatar Electronic Marketplace RFID, AmI, Mobile Networks Mobile Networks, Internet Resource Publishing, Searching Customers, Consumers Mobile Networks, Internet Interaction Mobile Networks, Internet Negotiation, Interaction

Information Day on Embedded Systems - Call 5 Jens Schumacher Dynamic Resource Discovery & Management P2P Network of Registry Servers Ecosystems / Electronic Marketplace 1. Publish XML Resource Description Resource Avatar  Resource publication & discovery analogous to Web Services  Resource Avatars publish Descriptions as XML Resource Description on Registry Servers in the Electronic Marketplace (analogous to publishing WSDL on UDDI servers)  Product Avatars search for suitable Resources in the Marketplace  Registry Servers forward searches for Resource Descriptions across the Marketplace similar to P2P applications and return results  Product Avatar begins negotiations with Resources selected by own reasoning 2. Search for Resources Product Avatar 4. Autonomous negotiation 3. Results: Resource Descriptions

Information Day on Embedded Systems - Call 5 Jens Schumacher Relevance to the Strategic Objective The IP will apply the Product Avatar concept to provide a middleware and platform for secure, swarming and fault-tolerant Networked Embedded Systems Each physical entity is represented in the virtual world by a Product Avatar which allow heterogeneous physical objects to cooperate with each other autonomously and intelligently by means of agent and reasoning technology The IP is driven by ambitious future applications from a number of perspectives: –Intelligent & Extended Products (Added value through additional services, enabling smart homes etc.) –Flexible, reconfigurable, autonomous production and manufacturing –… Scalability & self-organisation through Product Avatar & P2P platform architecture Ad-hoc networking enabling for arbitrary objects in the hybrid world Open interfaces to 3rd parties guaranteed by Open Source platform & exploitation approach

Information Day on Embedded Systems - Call 5 Jens Schumacher Benefits & Impact on the European Level Greatly increase production efficiency through a vastly more efficient allocation of production resources Complete transparency across the life-cycle –Greatly enhanced product quality –New after sales services Improved customer product acceptance and generation of new products and services Potential for new high value added services embedded in the Intelligent Product Powerful tools to move towards Knowledge Society Supports transition to customer-driven market Evolution of employees towards new roles and competencies
