AgendaSession-2 Welcome Shifting Instruction Towards the Common Core Learning Standards Why Text Complexity matters? An introduction to Close Reading Focusing on Close Reading to deepen understanding

Outcomes Participants will… Familiarize with complex texts How to use close reading strategies to improve student comprehension A close look at text Dependent questions

WHY TEXT COMPLEXITY MATTERS … “if students cannot read complex expository text to gain information, they will likely turn to text-free or text-light sources, such as video, podcasts, and tweets. These sources, while not without value, cannot capture the nuance, subtlety, depth, or breadth of ideas developed through complex texts.” CCSS ELA Appendix A—pg 4

ESSENTIAL QUESTION: How do we help our students to comprehend complex texts?

WE CAN HELP OUR STUDENTS IN DEEPENING THEIR COMPREHENSION THROUGH CLOSE READING 5
