Opening Agenda Norms & Opening Discussion Videos with Voices from across Tennessee Core Beliefs Overview and Discussion The Context of this Training Training Agenda and Norms Closing: A Message from TNCore Coaches

Norms Keep students at the center of focus and decision-making Be present and engaged – limit distractions, if urgent matters come up, step outside Start and end on time – maximize group learning by honoring session and break start and end times Monitor air time and share your voice - you’ll know which applies to you! Challenge with respect – disagreement can be healthy, respect all intentions Be solutions oriented – for the good of the group, look for the possible Risk productive struggle - this is safe space to get out of your comfort zone Balance urgency and patience - we need to see dramatic change and change will happen over time Any other norms desired to facilitate your learning?

Opening Discussion Today’s kindergarten students will graduate high school in 2026 and college in What do you think will be different about our world and country? What skills do you think will be more important for student success? If you were the parent of a five year old today, what would you want? What would you worry about?

VIDEO 1 - TN STUDENTS: THOUGHTS ON EDUCATION

Discussion What comments from the video resonated with you? What do the comments of students make you think about our role as teachers?

VIDEO 2 – PARENTS AND LEADERS: THOUGHTS ON EDUCATION

Discussion What key messages resonated with you from the remarks of community members and parents? How did the messages from the video align with the core beliefs? What are you most excited about for the implementation of Common Core? What are you most nervous about?

Core Beliefs Earning a living wage has never demanded more skills. This generation must learn more than their parents’ to do as well. All children are capable of learning and thinking at a high level. Children in Tennessee are as talented as any in the country and often capable of more than we expect. Our current education results pose a real threat to state and national competitiveness and security. Improving the skills of our children is vital for the future of Tennessee and America. Tennessee is on a mission to become the fastest improving state in the nation. Doing so will require hard work and significant learning for all. We must learn to teach in ways we were not taught ourselves. There is no recipe that will deliver a successful transition. Preparing for Common Core will demand effective leadership focused on student growth. PARCC is coming in two years. We need to use the transition wisely to make sure our students and our state are ready.
