Breakout Group A: Tuesday a.m. Potential emphases of ASM applications: Reconstruction pf past states of Arctic system (reanalysis, data assimilation) Model improvements Process studies (improved understanding) Prediction  future climate scenarios

Recommendations Broader community discussion of strategy for system reanalysis, specifically the extent of coupling of components In science applications, priority should be given to feedbacks that involve scales (or processes) not included in GCMs -- coupled vs. uncoupled experiments can capitalize upon system model capabilities to diagnose and evaluate feedbacks

Recommendations Observational programs designed specifically to inform model parameterization improvements, e.g., polynyas A model framework that is sufficiently modular to allow use of swapping in/out of simple model components (following philosophy of complex systems analysis)

Recommendations Topic for international workshop: strategy for adopting a stepwise approach, i.e., include components as they become mature/available In future workshop, participation of disciplines with undeveloped models should be ensured (e.g., seek out the right people to address inclusion of the human component)
