Meeting Expectations Gary Jedlovec Purpose of review SPoRT Mission and Vision Role of Science Advisory Committee Charge to Committee members transitioning unique NASA data and research technologies to operations

Purpose of Review SPoRT to provide comprehensive update to SAC on recent research and transition activities and partner interactions SAC to provide: – feedback on strengths, weaknesses, and accomplishments – direction for future activities – other program guidance Benefits: – SPoRT scientists – improve focus of activities – NASA Headquarters Program Manager (Tsengdar Lee) – program emphasis and funding support – Beneficiaries, partners, and end users

Foundation of SPoRT Mission - Apply NASA measurement systems and unique Earth science research to improve the accuracy of short-term (0-24 hr) weather prediction at the regional and local scale Goals: –Evaluate and assess the utility of NASA Earth Science data and products and unique research capabilities to address operational weather forecast problems –Develop and end to end framework to transition research capabilities to the operational weather community –Provide an environment which enables the development and testing of new capabilities to improve short-term weather forecasts on a regional scale –Ensure successful transition of new capabilities to operational weather entities for the benefit of society Vision – to become the focal point and facilitator for the transfer of NASA Earth science technologies to the operational weather community with emphasis on short-term forecasting on the regional and local scale transitioning unique NASA data and research technologies to operations FY05 IV Phase IPhase IIPhase III Development Implementation Adaptation FY02FY10 FY15 user interaction, assessment, end user focus paradigm relationships forecast problem expand partnerships new data, display systems new forecast problems

SAC Membership Represent beneficiaries, partners, end users - diversity –Knowledgeable of research to transition activities, NASA observational and research capabilities, end user forecast problems –Representatives from operational and research partners NWS NESDIS / ORA NCEP / JCSDA Nominated by SAC / SPoRT and approved by HQs Program Manager – 7-10 members – Serve through 2-3 SAC reviews for continuity transitioning unique NASA data and research technologies to operations

Role of Science Advisory Committee transitioning unique NASA data and research technologies to operations Major activities Serve as a knowledge resource on short-term weather prediction, satellite data and derived products, mesoscale modeling, data assimilation issues, short-term weather forecasting and their impact on operational weather forecasting activities Provide scientific guidance and direction for future SPoRT activities including – transitional activities and supporting research, and – new collaborations and partnerships Participate in biennial reviews leading to report on program / project recommendations

Charge Feedback –Quality of work – research and transitions –Program focus - right blend of R and T –New activities, observations, capabilities –Staff – expertise and skills match to SPoRT mission Guidance – Short-term (1 year) and long-term (3-5 year) focus of R and T activities – End users - WFOs and beyond – How to include more partners in our activities – NOAA to better embrace SPoRT’s activities – Better position SPoRT to achieve vision Recommendation for new members –Diversity –Specific individuals transitioning unique NASA data and research technologies to operations
