 Congress will Find itself divided Over the economy! Two Sides to the Argument!

FINANCIAL DEBATE -nation had large war debt from American Revolutionary War -Alexander Hamilton’s plan -pay all debts – tariff (tax on Imports) -national bank system -debate over power to create a national bank -implied powers? - Not clearly stated in Constitution, can we do it???

US would gladly do business with either France or England, which made the other country mad… POLITICAL AFFAIRS -British harassment of settlers in the west -French Revolution in British and French at war -U.S. neutrality

-Whiskey Rebellion -farmer’s rebellion over an excise tax on whiskey they produced -rebellion crushed by Washington and the army before it begins -proves the strength of the new federal gov’t

POLITICAL AFFAIRS -Jay’s Treaty -trade treaty with Britain -highly unpopular b/c of the Revolution -Pinckney’s Treaty -trade treaty with Spain -access to the Mississippi R. -Treaty of Greenville -Battle of Fallen Timbers -Ohio Valley area US was shipping / Selling supplies to France. Britain could seize the cargo and not pay us for it! John Jay got no where with Britain, only good thing is US would get Most Favored Nation when trading with Britain… Whoopee…… Republicans were outraged but it prevented war with Britain, for now..

POLITICAL AFFAIRS -Jay’s Treaty -trade treaty with Britain -highly unpopular b/c of the Revolution -Pinckney’s Treaty -trade treaty with Spain -access to the Mississippi R. -Treaty of Greenville -Battle of Fallen Timbers -Ohio Valley area Spain will join France in its war against Great Britain (French Revolution is raging….) Spain was afriad US and Britain would join forces and seize their territories in North America. Pinckney’s Treaty granted US could use and navigate the Mississippi River which as Spain’s possession and we could do business in the Spain port city of New Orleans…

POLITICAL AFFAIRS -Jay’s Treaty -trade treaty with Britain -highly unpopular b/c of the Revolution -Pinckney’s Treaty -trade treaty with Spain -access to the Mississippi R. -Treaty of Greenville -Battle of Fallen Timbers -Ohio Valley area American settlers were flooding over the Appalachian Mtns into the Ohio River Valley that was NOT part of the US territory, it was inhabited by Native Americas. Following a very nasty encounter at the Battle of Fallen Timbers (natives suffered heavy loses), Native America nations signed the Treaty of Greenville. They would give up much of the Ohio River Valley in exchange for $10,000 a year. Not that the federal gov’t would honor this deal for long…..
