Presentation transcript:

The Mission of the Church Class 1: The harvest is plentiful but the laborers are few The Bible as a missions story Class 2: Every Christian is a world Christian (going, praying, sending, welcoming, mobilizing) Class 3: A closer look at mobilizing The Pauling Cycle

Every Christian a World Christian The main habits are: Going Praying Sending Welcoming Mobilizing

So what does this mean? Take a look at these five habits and ask these questions: What habits can I major in while in this season of life and which should I minor in? What habits are my strongest? Which are my weakest? What are some practical applications I can make regarding each habit to build them into my life?

Soul Searching Exercise What is the church? Why does the church exist? How does #2 impact my life?

Every Christian is a Mobilizer A mobilizer is a normal, everyday Christian who walks with God, yet has a global perspective and stays on the home front to rouse others to action “Christians need conversion to missions as much as a sinner needs conversion to Christ.” – A.T. Pierson A mobilizer in simplest terms is one who multiplies, disciples, or mentors in missions.

Being a Catalyst Character What would the ripple effect be if you were missing from the story right now? Would it impact your church, workplace, or the world as a result of your absence? Jesus was the most influential catalyst character in our history.

Being a Catalyst Character Paul was a catalyst character. The letters to Ephesus, Galatia, and even Romans were heavily focused on God’s plan to include the Gentiles in his offer of salvation. Paul called others to join him in ministering to the nations, giving them Biblical evidence from the Old Testament (Rom 15:8-12) and giving them a look at the state of the unreached world (Rom 15:19-24).

Not Location, but Lordship and Lifestyle Mobilization is not about getting people to change their location, but about Lordship and a lifestyle that matches God’s heart. What are you willing to do to make mission- minded disciples here and now? Habakkuk 2:2 says to “Write down the vision, make it plain, so that the herald may run with it.”

Make Disciples What is discipleship? (Matthew 28:18-20) A. Conversion – baptism B. Being taught to obey, including doctrine – Titus 1:9, 16; 2:1 C. With the ultimate authority being Jesus (for teaching/obedience)

Make Disciples Different types A. General 1. Public teaching – 2 Tim 4:1, 2 2. Personal instruction/shepherding – Titus 2:3, 4; 1 Peter 5:1, 2; Jesus’ example B. For church leadership – 2 Tim 2:2

Make Disciples Selection A. Jesus selected certain people – John 15:16 B. Have to be available C. Must realize they’re submitting to authority/teaching D. Have to be responsible (if they’re going to take on responsibility!) E. Of good character (see elder requirements in Titus, 1 Tim) F. FAT –faithful, available, teachable G. Given 2 Tim 2:2 – demonstrate ability to understand/explain Scripture

Make Disciples What’s involved – a relationship! A. A challenge – let them know what they’re getting into 1. Disciples in Jesus’ day understood that culturally 2. Understanding that elders have authority (1 Tim 5:17) B. Doctrine – 2 Tim. 2:2 C. Ministry skill 1. Governing (ruling, administrating, responsibility) 2. Evangelism (Matt 10:5-7) 3. Study/teaching of the word D. Model ministry (as Jesus did) E. Delegate things to them to grow (like evangelism, etc.) F. Character (elder requirement lists/godly woman)

The Final Question Why is discipleship and mentoring in missions important in the context of the purpose of the church?

Pauline Cycle

Conclusion Let leadership know how they can help you be a better mobilizer! There are many resources and training options available in this church! Thanks for taking the class!
