POSITIVE BEHAVIOR INTERVENTIONS AND SUPPORTS PBIS

PBIS Defined Positive Behavioral Intervention and Supports (PBIS) is a systemic approach to proactive, school- wide behavior based on a Response to Intervention (RtI) model. PBIS applies evidence-based programs, practices and strategies for all students to increase academic performance, improve safety, decrease problem behavior, and establish a positive school culture.

Core Principles Be Responsible Be Respectful Be Safe

History Second year of program development Last year team assembled consisting of two coaches and five other members. Students have been invited to team meetings and ideas have been solicited from SAC as well as the faculty as a whole. No budget established for the program. Membership is volunteer and resources have been solicited from local businesses and organizations.

Data Driven Decision Making The PBIS Team in the HS uses data to guide the development of the program. Prior to the start of this year the team, using data from referrals, identified the cafeteria and hallways as areas that need to be focused on. Expectations were developed for those areas and posted on the walls. One introduction and one refresher of those expecations has been presented to students. Data used includes graphs that break down discipline referrals by incident and location.

Referrals by Month

Referrals by Location

Faculty have been writing positive behavior referrals since the beginning of the year. Well received by parents and students Tracked by grade and posted outside of the main office Ice cream social held in the fall and winter to reinforce positive behavior Investigating a model to allow students to write positive behavior referrals for other students.

Focus on targeted behavioral interventions specific to student needs identified through data. Such interventions can take place in the classroom. Closer tie to IST (Instructional Support Team) Provide tiered layers of support based on individual student needs. (Check and Connect, mentoring programs, Check in/Check out, etc.) Tie into Dignity for All Students Act taking effect July 1, (See Handout)
