England Becomes Protestant Why does King Henry VIII change the Church of England?

Reign of King Henry VIII King Henry VIII was a devout Catholic who attacked Luther’s ideas Henry’s first child is a daughter, Mary I Henry feels women are too weak to be rulers and needs to have a son Wife Catherine is 42, Henry thinks she is too old to have another child Henry wants his marriage to be annulled (cancelled) The Pope does not allow the annulment Henry asks Parliament to pass laws ending the Pope’s power in England Henry creates his own religion, the Anglican Church – King is head of the Church 2nd wife, Anne Boleyn gives him another daughter, Elizabeth Henry charges Anne with treason and she is arrested & later beheaded

His third wife finally gives him a son, Edward VI 3rd wife dies after child birth, Henry will marry three more times Tudor Monarch Religion Reason for beliefs Henry VIII Catholic, becomes Protestant Switches because Pope won’t allow annulment (needs male heir) Edward VI Protestant Became King at age 9, was influenced by Protestant advisors Mary I Catholic Unhappy with her father’s methods brings extreme Catholic views Elizabeth I Protestant Ends religious extremism & brings stability
