Librarian’s Index to the Internet Return to Contents7

Webb library catalog 8Return to Contents

Webb library catalog The catalog uses Boolean search terms (and, or, not) Keyword searching will get you the most results For research, it often helps to search by Subject if Keyword gives you too many results 9Return to Contents

Webb library catalog Spelling is critical in our catalog, which means that “celt” will return zero results in a subject search and “celts” will return seven Using an Asterix (celt*) will return the most results (celt, celts, celtic,…) If you can’t find anything, vary your search terms. Sometimes it helps to do a keyword search first, then find what subject terms are used in the results 10Return to Contents

Webb library catalog The search results are sorted by Title automatically. This can be changed to Author, Call Number, or Publication Date Select any result to view more details Add any or all results to your list 11Return to Contents

Webb library catalog The detailed description will give you specific information about the work Selecting any hyperlinked text, such as subjects, will run a search for those new parameters Always be sure to hit the back button in the catalog, and not the back button on your web browser 12Return to Contents

Webb library catalog To view the items you have added to your list, click the “My List” tab at the top of the screen This list can be edited, printed, or saved as a notepad document WARNING: If you leave your computer for a long period of time, the list will delete itself 13Return to Contents

Webb library catalog When printing, you may specify a title for the book list, add additional text, and you have three format options – Bibliography: gives you the bibliography in MLA style, WITHOUT call number – Brief: gives you Title, Author, Publishing year, Availability, and the Call Number – Full: gives you all the information found on the detailed results page (see slide 11) 14Return to Contents

ISLE libraries’ catalog 15Return to Contents

ISLE libraries’ catalog To search ISLE libraries, select the “Other Libraries” tab on the left side and then select which library you want to search The easiest way is to select all Run your search the exact same way you would run a search through the Webb catalog 16Return to Contents

ISLE libraries’ catalog The search results and lists are treated the same as a regular Webb catalog search 17Return to Contents

ISLE libraries’ catalog In order to get a book through Interlibrary Loan, we need the Title, Author, Call Number, and the Library name To find out which library holds the book you want, click on “Show Copies” 18Return to Contents

Claremont Colleges library 19Return to Contents

Claremont Colleges library We are able to get a book from the Claremont Colleges if you need it and can not find it anywhere else You can link to the website through our library homepage or go directly to Return to Contents

Claremont Colleges library As with Webb’s catalog, Claremont uses Boolean search terms If you can’t find what you are looking for initially, edit your search terms to make your search broader Remember to check spelling 21Return to Contents

Claremont Colleges library Results are automatically sorted by relevance, but that can be changed to date or title Be sure to check the status of a book before requesting it 22Return to Contents

Claremont Colleges library In order to request an Interlibrary Loan (ILL), we need the Title, Author, and the Call Number Do research that requires ILL books early because it takes a while for them to get here 23Return to Contents

JSTOR 24Return to Contents

JSTOR When you open JSTOR, check to make sure it says “access to JSTOR is provided by Webb Schools” Browse by discipline, do a simple search, or select Advanced Search Return to Contents25

Encyclopedia Britannica The online version of Encyclopedia Britannica can be searched like a database but can also be browsed like the print versions You are also able to search The Merriam- Webster Dictionary 48Return to Contents

Encyclopedia Britannica Search results give a brief excerpt from the text to demonstrate how the search term is used in context You can save results to a workspace, which you can then share with anyone else. This comes in handy for group projects 49Return to Contents

Encyclopedia Britannica The workspace requires a project name and a password Anyone who has that project name and password will be able to edit the project Anyone who only has the name will be able to view but not edit 50Return to Contents

Encyclopedia Britannica Within the individual results, you can still save to a workspace and you are also able to it out Words and phrases that are blue and underlined link to the corresponding articles 51Return to Contents
