WARM UP: What is a watershed?

Watershed: The area of land that precipitation drains into a river system is known as a watershed. We live in the Chesapeake Bay Watershed.

What is Groundwater?  Groundwater is water that is located underground.

All groundwater!

The area of land that precipitation drains into a river system. water that is located underground. Feeds into separated by Tributaries to rivers to lakes to bays to oceans Divide – the ridge or high point that causes water to go one way or the other

Watershed Diagrams The area of land that precipitation drains into a river system.

Virginia has sections of watershed that flow into a specific river! Whenever you see a creek, stream, river, delta, lake or ocean you see a part of the watershed.

Agricultural Runoff Agricultural runoff includes pesticides, animal waste, salts, fertilizers, decomposed food, and trash or plastics used in running the farms or ranches. Urban (city) Runoff Urban runoff is another leading causes of bad water quality. Water from lawns with fertilizer, trash, oil from cars, factory pollution, or a/c waste absorbs into the ground.

Threats like those produced from agricultural runoff and suburban sprawl are destroying our clean water, the animals and plants that live in or near the water.

Words to KNOW: Ecosystem- all living and non-living things that interact in a particular area. Biotic factors: All living organisms Examples: animals like geese, ducks, foxes (other species) & plants including moss or algae Abiotic factors: All non-living things Examples: rocks, soil, sunlight, water, oxygen, temperature, salinity
