Packing Tape Figures Creating Installations with Life Scale Figures

Project Objectives Create an installation using life scale gestured figures. Collaborate with your partner to decide whether your figure will be displayed alone or combined with each other for the final installation. In pairs create your gestured figures in packing tape using a saran wrap base.

Gesture An image or sculpture of a person holding a specific pose.

Figure A sculpture or image of a human being.

Art Installation A large sculpture like work of art that alters the way a viewer experiences an environment.

Art Elements to consider Form-use your body to create a dynamic form. Movement-create an interesting pose to catch the eye of the viewer. Balance-Consider balance in constructing your figure and pose. Think if you will need extra material help balance your final work. Emphasis-this is how you show your idea and how you want the viewer to see when they look at your figure. Line-More diagonal lines with limbs and poses makes your work more eye catching.

Construction Process 1.Use one layer of saran wrap to cover your body part you are sculpting. 2.Sparingly cover the saran wrap with three layers of tape. 3.Cut the section off with caution. 4.Retape the section that was cut. Be respectful to each others bodies. I will report sexual harassment or physical abuse.

Examples

Sketch Assignment 1.Draw a Gestured Figure that shows what you plan to build for your packing tape project. 2.Describe the main idea you want your figure to express to your audience. 3.Write where and how you will install the final work. 4.Write anything extra you will need to help display your installation.

Installation Critique What initial reaction did you have when you view the installation? How does this figure change your perception of its environment? What is working well for this artwork? What could be improved?
