Cyber Bullying Level 5

Hey Everybody My name is Tek. I’m going to be your guide today! I’m a part of i-SAFE, and we are concerned with helping you to be safe online. We want you to recognize and avoid dangerous, destructive or unlawful online behavior, and we hope to empower you to communicate what you learn from i-SAFE with others.  

The Plan For this lesson you will be learning about Cyber Bullying. You will be developing a large poster or bulletin board of quilt squares to reflect your learning.

All Right – Let’s Get Started Make sure you have a copy of the activity page called the Bully Fact Sheet We will be using it to learn more about Cyber Bullying.

Brainstorm What does the word Kindness mean??? What are some things that a kind person might do? Why do people act kind? Why do people sometimes forget to be kind?

While you brainstorm - Discuss what being friendly means. Discuss the positive affects of being friendly  Discuss when it's important to NOT be friendly (For example: in response to communication from strangers on the Internet) Discuss how students feel when people are friendly to them, versus unfriendly to them Discuss how being friendly effects them in school and at home.

Physical Community vs. Cyber community How is communication in these two communities different? Why do you need to be more careful when communicating online?

More Brainstorming! Ok – we talked about being Kind. The opposite of that is Mean. - What do you think the definition of Mean is? - When has someone been mean to you? - Why do people behave in this way sometimes? Share a time when someone was mean to you.

Cyber Bullying Cyber bullying means to behave in a mean or threatening manner when online. How is cyber bullying like bullying in your physical community? How is it different?

Let’s Take a Closer Look at the Bully Facts

Bully Facts Kindness: To be kind is to be nice to others. Kind acts are helpful, show consideration, and make the givers and the receivers feel good. Kind acts are NOT mean. You like it when others show kindness to you. Can you think of an example of when someone was nice to you or considerate of your feelings?

Bullying Bullying: When someone is mean to others and picks on them, it’s bullying. That includes making fun of others, calling them names or beating up on them.

Cyber Bullying Cyber Bullying: Cyber bullies are those bullies who use the Internet to be mean to others. E-mail provides one way for them to be mean to others. Flame mail – that’s mail designed to make the other person mad – Another way bullies use the Internet is through bulletin boards and chat sites to make their comments public. Finally, some Cyber bullies build websites devoted to making a person or persons feel bad. Kindness can become its own motive. We are made kind by being kind. - Eric Hoffer

What to do if you are Cyber Bullied Tell someone. Don’t keep this to yourself. Tell a trusted adult about the bullying. Don’t open or read messages by Cyber bullies. Tell your school if it is school related. Schools have a bullying plan in place. Don’t erase the messages – they may be needed to take action. Instead, put them in a folder unread. Protect yourself – never agree to meet with the person or with anyone you meet online. If bullied through chat or instant messaging, the “bully” can often be blocked. Tell someone! If you are threatened with harm, inform the local police.

How to avoid being bullied online Don’t give out private information such as passwords, pins, name, address, phone number, school name, or family and friends names. This information can be used by bullies and other harmful people on the Internet. Use Netiquette. Be polite online and others will tend to do the same. If someone does get angry or bullies you, ignore them – online Cyber bullies want a reaction just like other bullies. Don’t send a message when you are angry – it is hard to undo things that are said in anger. Delete messages from people you don’t know or from people who seem angry or mean. When something doesn’t seem right, it probably isn’t. Get out of the site, chat, etc. Prevention

Netiquette Let’s take a look at the Netiquette page. How do you think Netiquette can prevent online bullying?

E-mail Netiquette Netiquette Use Meaningful Subject Lines Tell the person what you are sending to them so they know what to expect when the message is opened. Don't Type With ALL CAPS This is known as online screaming, and is considered to be rude. Think Before You Type It’s easy to be misunderstood in Cyberspace – be clear about what you want to say. Don’t send a message when you are angry – it’s hard to undo things that are said in anger. Use Emoticons   to help others understand what you mean.

E-mail Netiquette Netiquette Think About Attachments Don’t send something as an attachment if it can be copied and pasted into the email text. Don’t send really large attachments. Don’t send attachments with viruses. And…be careful of attachments you download. Don't Spam Don’t send out messages that aren’t wanted! Don't Pass Around E-Hoaxes Use your favorite Internet Search engine to learn the truth about the latest e-hoaxes, urban myths, chain e-mail and pervasive riff-raff circulating on the Internet. Don’t mislead others and cause alarm or stress. Don't Pass Around Chain Letters They are annoying.

Chatroom and Instant Messaging Netiquette Many of the same conventions that apply to newsgroups and e-mail are also relevant in chatrooms. You're still just typing your thoughts and sending them to people, but in a chatroom, they're just a little quicker to respond. Avoid Using ALL CAPS It’s still considered yelling. Decide What Tone the Conversation Has Before Posting Don't use offensive language or nicknames. Always avoid making personal attacks and calling names.

Chatroom and Instant Messaging Netiquette Don't "Flood" the Chatroom Flooding is repeating messages over and over, or filling the screen with gibberish, in order to impede communication in the chatroom. Be Nice to Newbies If someone stumbles into your chat, who is obviously new to this medium, show them some patience and help them get the hang of it.

Netiquette Most of these "netiquette rules" are really just common sense. Give people you meet online the same respect you would give someone in person.

  :-) :-( :-( :-)   Emoticons   :-) :-( :-( :-)   Emoticons Emoticons stand for emotion icons. They are used to convey emotion in writing. When emailing, IMing, or Chatting, writers use emoticons to show when joking, upset, or angry. They are useful so that someone doesn’t take something written the wrong way.

Emoticons Emoticons are made of a sequence of characters on your keyboard. The most common emoticon is the smile. It is used to tell people – don’t take what I said seriously, or I meant it as a joke or in good humor. A smile  is made up of a colon for the eyes, a dash for the nose, and the right parenthesis for the smiling mouth.

Here are some Emoticons for you to use :-) Standard Smiley – Shows you are kidding around or in a good mood. :-( Frown – Shows you are upset about something ;-) Winking :-D Laughing :-/ Undecided or confused :-Q Shows Confusion :-O Shows surprise or realization of an error

I hope you learned something I know I did! All right – Time for an Activity!!! Let’s put that Netiquette to good use! You can do this as a whole class, in small groups, or as a race

Instant Messaging Aptitude Your teacher will give you a worksheet called Instant Messaging Aptitude. Correct this IM session! Both friends are making some netiquette mistakes. Can you find all of the errors in this session that aren’t very nice? Also, add in fun emoticons   to make sure the messages show the correct emotion. When you’re finished we’ll go over it together!

Don’t Peek!!! The next few slides contain the answers to the Instant Messaging Aptitude worksheet – so make sure you have it finished! As you go through the answer key – discuss the changes and suggestions.

Christy: I don’t know, mike ain’t that bad. Christy: Hey did you hear what happened to Megan at school today? Don’t gossip inappropriately.   Jeff: No, fill me in! Christy: I heard she flipped out completely and had to be restrained until the police showed up. Jeff: Wow, I always did think she was freaky. Her and Mike both – just a little too weird for me. This information is spreading gossip – one component of bullying and harassment that takes place online. Christy: I don’t know, mike ain’t that bad. Jeff: I can’t wait to let Sue know about Megan – I’m IMing her now Christy: Yeah just don’t say I told. Do that and I won’t ever fill you in again. If joking – use emoticons  Jeff: YEAH YEAH – GO JUMP! Using Caps is considered shouting

Christy: Hey, I just checked out your profile Christy: Hey, I just checked out your profile. Never looked at it before – cool pic. NEVER fill out your profile with personal information. It can be used inappropriately by others. Also – never post pictures online. They can be used without permission.   Jeff: Thanks. Yeah, I checked yours before – that’s how I got hold of your email address. Don’t email others without permission – it can be considered spamming. Christy: Cool. Steve just sent me a file to download. I met Steve online through Sue. Not sure how she met him. You ever talk to him? Don’t consider people you meet online your friends – remember – they may not be who they say they are. Also – be careful of items you receive from people online. Jeff: Nope, don’t know him. So what did he send you? Christy: Looks like some pics and a game to install. Don’t download unknown items – could contain viruses, etc. Jeff: Be sure to send it on to me. I might send it to a few other people on my buddy list. Don’t spam others.

One Last Activity Kindness Quilt Brainstorm the qualities that make a good cyber citizen. Brainstorm simple things people can do that are kind when they communicate on the Internet, and share with the group. Using colorful construction paper, design and decorate a quilt square. Include on the square: 1. One quality of kindness that should be demonstrated online. 2. One action that you will try to develop when communicating online.

Commit to completing these three kind acts. Last But Not Least Share your quilt squares with the class. As a class, put quilt squares together on a bulletin board, large poster board, or long stretch of craft paper to make a class quilt. Review:        1. Each of you is a citizen in the cyber community which has rules and guidelines just like your school community.        2. Traits of a good Cyber citizen: kindness, willing to follow rules, uses Netiquette, etc.   Discuss how you can make a difference in other peoples lives by behaving considerately. Write down on a sheet of paper three things you could do to be kind to others. Commit to completing these three kind acts.

How Do you Know When You’re Done? Have you: Covered all the reference pages? Discussed what you have learned with your class? Completed the Instant Messaging Aptitude worksheet? Completed your Kindness Quilt?
