The Icelandic school system

General education General education (matriculation exam) as preparation for university Languages Natural Sciences Sociology Sciences

Vocational training Information Technology Health care – Assistant (Practical) – Nurses – Masseurs – Dental Assistants – Pharmacy Technicians – Medical Secretaries

IT pilot project The school is one of the leading secondary schools in Iceland in the implementation of IT in education and worked on a 3-years pilot project under the auspices of the Ministry of Culture and Education from 1999 to 2002.

Laptops A wireless net was set up to make it possible for students and teachers to connect to the local net as well as to the Internet in all parts of the school building – toilets included. About 70 teachers are today equipped with laptops. About 250 student use laptops at school.

Distance and distributed teaching and learning In 1999 the school started to offer a few courses with distributed teaching. In autumn 2001 the first courses were offered in distance learning. In autumn 2004 over 90 courses were offered in distance learning and 1300 students registered.

What do we achieve through international cooperation? Teachers are getting closer – by learning about different cultures and school systems – by learning about the needs of other teachers – by exchanging ideas Students are motivated: – to think multinational – to value their own cultural heritage – to understand themselves as European citizen
