National Curriculum requirements (from 2014) Pupils should be taught to: Year 1 recognise, name and write ½ as one of two equal parts of an object, shape or quantity recognise name and write ¼ and ¾ as parts of an object, shape or quantity find ½, ¼ and ¾ of a shape or quantity Year 2 Ensure pupils are taught ½, ¼ and ¾ as objects and then as operators on discrete and continuous quantities. As objects, pupils recognise and combine ½, ¼ and ¾ as parts of a whole. As operators, pupils recognise and find, for example, half of a length, container, set of objects and shapes

1 cake, 2 teachers We need to cut the cake into 2 equal pieces. Each teacher will have half (1/2) of the cake. We are sharing 1 cake equally between 2 teachers.

We need to split the food into 4 equal parts and the small dog will eat 1 part and the big dog will eat 3 parts. The small dog will eat ¼ of the food and the big dog will eat ¾ of the food.
