How can we find equal parts of a whole? Finding Thirds and Sixths Today you are going to split some of these sandwiches into thirds. If three people share this sandwich equally, what fraction of the sandwich will each person get? Do you think that 1/3 of this sandwich will be more or less than 1/2? We shaded one third of the rectangle. What fractional part of the rectangle is not shaded? In other words, if you eat 1/3 of the sandwich, how much of the sandwich is left?

How can we find equal parts of a whole? How are Thirds and Sixths Related? Did anyone use the way you showed 1/3 of the rectangle to find 2/6 of the rectangle? What can we say about 1/3 and 2/6? How do you know? What fraction is equal to 2/3? What fraction is equal to 3/6? Work with your shoulder partner for a few minutes and see whether you can find any other fractions that are equal to these two fractions. Fractions That Are Equal 1/3=2/6 2/3=4/6 3/6=1/2
