March 25, 2015 Aim: How do we properly use citations in an essay?

In-Text Citing for Both Books and Articles What I want to cite: Quotation from Lord of the Flies by William Golding on page 77: “What I’m saying is…maybe it’s only us.” How to cite: Simon drops a bombshell when he says,“What I’m saying is…maybe it’s only us” (Golding 77). You always, always, always want to set up your evidence. Putting a quotation at the start of your sentence without anything else is confusing. Who is saying it? What’s the context? Frequent Error : In parenthesis, you always write the author’s last name, not the character’s name. Also, only put number of page. Never write out “page” or “p” or “pg”

Perhaps the quotation you wish to use is very lengthy and will take up six or more lines. The formatting for this is a bit different.  No quotation marks  Indentation for the entire quotation  Skipped line before and after  But still a parenthetical citation In-Text Citing for Both Books and Articles

Here’s the quotation I wish to use: “Somewhere over the darkened curve of the world the sun and moon were pulling; and the film of water on the earth planet was held, bulging slightly on one side while the solid core turned. The great wave of the tide moved further along the island and the water lifted. Softly, surrounded by a fringe of inquisitive bright creatures, itself a silver shape beneath the steadfast constellations, Simon's dead body moved out towards the open sea.” Here’s how to correctly cite it: William Golding’s Lord of the Flies is filled with descriptive imagery, allowing the reader to feel engaged in the natural beauty of the world: Somewhere over the darkened curve of the world the sun and moon were pulling; and the film of water on the earth planet was held, bulging slightly on one side while the solid core turned. The great wave of the tide moved further along the island and the water lifted. Softly, surrounded by a fringe of inquisitive bright creatures, itself a silver shape beneath the steadfast constellations, Simon's dead body moved out towards the open sea (Golding ____)

So does anything change from the last time we went over in-text citations? YES. 1.Now that you are writing an essay containing multiple sources, you always need to provide the author’s last name and the page number in every in-text citation. 2.Because William Golding penned two of the texts you will be citing, in the parenthesis you use the following format: For Lord of the Flies: (Golding, Lord of the Flies, page #) For Why Boys Become Vicious (Golding, “Why Boys Become Vicious”) In-Text Citing for Both Books and Articles

Article Citing You are citing at least one quotation from the following articles: Stanford Prison Experiment by Martin Shuttleworth from Why Boys Become Vicious by William Golding from The Examiner (1989) The Perils of Obedience by Stanley Milgram from Harper’s Magazine (Dec 1973, page 62)

Works Cited Page What you need to know about the Works Cited page: The Works Cited page is a separate page from your essay. You do not add it to the last page of your writing. It must be a completely new page. All items must be in alphabetical order by last name of author. Citations must be double spaced but there is no space between each citation When a citation runs over one line, you indent the second and, if applicable, third and subsequent lines. Each citation must provide a “Medium of Publication” which means print, web, CD, DVD, etc. For Lord of the Flies, you will write Print. For all other sources, you will write Web.

BOOK CITATION: Lastname, Firstname. Title of Book. City of Publication: Publisher, Year of Publication. Medium of Publication. ARTICLE CITATION: Author(s). "Title of Article." Title of Periodical. Day Month Year: pages. Medium of publication. WEBSITE CITATION: Last name, First name. "Article Title." Website Title. Publisher of Website, Day Month Year article was published. Web. Day Month Year article was accessed. Works Cited Page
