Silesian Botanical Garden is one of the earliest institutions of its kind in Poland. It was established to conduct scientific research, conservation, for teaching and learning purposes. The main aim is the conservation of biodiversity, which includes: creating a wide diversity of habitats and encouraging maximum diversity, creating a maximum diversity of plants, protecting the capacity of the plant population for generative reproduction. The Silesian Botanical Garden conducts the following scientific research: diagnosis of the reasons for the loss of biodiversity, environmental data gathering, modelling of environmental changes, developing remedial actions.

The center is the only local government unit of this type in Poland.
