ABEL TASMAN – FIRST CONTACT IN N.Z L.I To understand what happened when the very first Europeans came to New Zealand

WHERE DID TASMAN SAIL?

STARTER What do you think it was like the first time Maori and European ever set eyes on each other? What would they have been thinking?

MAORI EUROPEANBOTH

FIRST ENCOUNTER – 19 Dec In pairs, read the account you have been given. In pairs, person A = a Dutch sailor person B = One of the Maori present in Golden Bay Imagine you are writing to your family telling them what happened on these days. You must write the story from your perspective.

THINKING DEEPER… 1.Why do you think the first meeting between Maori and Europeans turned out the way it did? 2.How do you think other European explorers would feel about coming to New Zealand after hearing Tasman’s story? Why?

In fact, no other Europeans did come to New Zealand for over 120 years! The next Europeans to set eyes on New Zealand were Captain Cook and his men in 1769.

Homework Find and list 3 places in New Zealand that are named after Abel Tasman. Have you been to one? Use an atlas, look at an online map, ask someone at home…
