Namastey from New Delhi, India

Delhi in its centuries of existence has been called Dehleez, Delhie, Dilli, Delhi, yet the spirit has been indomitable. Eras have disappeared into the past, kingdoms and dynasties established and vanished, history written and rewritten. Yet the city’s charm –mellow and warm has enticed one and all…

With the rise of the Delhi Sultanate, it became a major political, cultural and commercial city. In 1639, Mughal emperor Shahjahan built a new walled city which became the capital of the Mughal Empire from 1649 to The British moved their capital from Calcutta to Delhi in 1911 and gave Edwin Lutyens the task of designing a part of Delhi. In recognition of his contribution, New Delhi is also known as "Lutyens' Delhi”.

The view offered by spacious roads lined with beautiful trees around Rashtrapati Bhawan (or Presidential House), North and South Blocks and Parliament House fill the natives with national pride. This area is one of the city's most visited tourist centers.

What Gateway of India is to Mumbai, India Gate is to Delhi. Evenings at India Gate attract huge crowds and present a carnival of color, gaiety with the picnickers and hawkers. The canopy at the India Gate, that once covered the statue of George V, was removed after the Independence. It is now the site of the Indian Army’s Amar Jawan Jyoti (or the flame of the immortal soldier)

Being the political and economic hub of northern India, Delhi attracts people from all parts of India, further enhancing its diverse character. A home to the embassies of 160 countries- the city has a large expatriate population as well. Hindi language is the principal spoken language while English is the principal written language of the city. Other languages commonly spoken in the city are dialects of Hindi, Punjabi and Urdu. Hinduism is the religion of 81% of Delhi's population. There are also large communities of Muslims (10.7%), Sikhs (4.0%), Jains (1.1%) and Christians (0.9%) in the city. Other minorities include Parsis, Anglo-Indians, Buddhists and Jews.

Old Delhi still contains legacies of its rich Mughal past, which can be found among the old city's tangle of snaking lanes and teeming bazaars. The dingy markets of the Old City have an eclectic product range, from pickles, candy-colored herbal potions to silver jewelry, bridal attire, fancy laces, uncut material and linen. Some of old regal havelis (palatial residences) are still there in the Old City. Chandni Chowk, a three century-old shopping area, is one of the most popular shopping areas in Delhi for jewellery and Zari saris. Notable among Delhi's arts and crafts are the Zardozi (an embroidery done with gold thread) and Meenakari (the art of enameling).

The Taste and texture of the Street Food in Delhi is simply unparalleled… so much so that the city has come to be regarded as ‘the restaurant capital of India’…

Different cuisines of Delhi makes it a heaven for the gourmets. Due to its cosmopolitan factor, cuisines from every part of India, including Gujarati, Rajasthani, Maharashtrian, Bengali cuisines, and South Indian food items like idli, sambar and dosa are widely available. There are several food outlets in Delhi serving international cuisine, including Italian, Japanese, Continental, Middle-Eastern, Thai and Chinese.

Some central places in the city famous for handicrafts, hippy clothes, shoes, bags, accessories and so on… PAHARGANJ, KHAN MARKET, CONNAUGHT PLACE, JANPATH, TIBETAN MARKET

Mandi House in Delhi is a popular hub of many cultural places- Kamani Auditorium, Rabindra Bhawan, Shri Ram Centre for Performing Arts, National School of Drama, The Little Theatre Group, Russian Centre of Science & Culture, Triveni Kala Sangam and so on…
