Who is responsible for safe traffic? n Facilities Professionals Design and Maintenance n Public Safety Police & Fire n School Principal & Staff School Principal & Staff Ultimately responsible for safety on- campus Risk Management Department

What authority do “civilians” have to deal with traffic situations? n Principal and staff have authority to direct flow of traffic and pedestrians on campus n Right to enter and remain on school grounds subject to safe conduct and obedience to school rules and staff direction Risk Management Department

Am I “covered” by insurance? n Covered by Liability Insurance and Workers’ Comp u Any duties that are part of your job u Any duties that you have been instructed to do by your supervisor u Emergency Management – School Emergency Plan n Document and Report any accidents or incidents Risk Management Department

What do I need to do ? n Make eye contact with drivers and pedestrians n Use your whole hand when stopping people and vehicles n Be visible and heard! Wear a traffic vest and use a whistle n Explain traffic rules to those not following the flow n Have a handout with the school’s traffic flow and rules with you n Report safety hazards immediately Risk Management Department

What about difficult or disorderly drivers? n Identify “repeat offenders” by child, vehicle, parent or description n Report them to the principal u Meeting / Phone Call - Identify unique needs and provide information u Trespass Warning n Immediate safety hazards – u Drunk or Reckless Drivers u Weapons u Life-threatening situations – get help!
