WHAT IS HUMAN TRAFFICKING?

LABOR TRAFFICKING

IN FACTORIES “I was an easy target for my trafficker. I was a desperate mother looking for a way to provide for my three children. I was told that I would have a good job with good pay and a place where to live. When I got here I was locked in the factory and forced to work 17 to 18 hours a day, seven days a week.” -Flor Molina, labor trafficking survivor

ON FARMS ‣ DEBT Workers are often trying to pay down a transportation or smuggling fee. These debts can top out at tens of thousands of dollars. ‣ THREATS Workers face physical and sexual assault. If they do not cooperate, they risk violence toward family members.

IN HOMES ‣ EMPTY PROMISES Domestic workers are often recruited with promises of an education, stable employment, or a safe home ‣ GRUELING WORK Workdays frequently last hours. ‣ NO WAGES ‣ CUT OFF Workers are often not allowed to communicate with family and friends. ‣ ABUSE

SEX TRAFFICKING

WHEN DOES WORK BECOME SLAVERY? When force, fraud, or coercion is used to keep an individual in an exploitative and abusive situation.

HUMAN TRAFFICKING IS A $150 BILLION–A–YEAR INDUSTRY BECAUSE IT IS HIGH PROFIT + LOW RISK Slaves can be bought, used and sold multiple times. This makes human trafficking potentially more profitable than the illicit sale of guns or drugs.

A SEX TRAFFICKING VICTIM’S QUOTA IS $500 PER NIGHT SHE IS FORCED TO HAVE SEX 7 NIGHTS A WEEK AND MAKES $3,500 A WEEK A PIMP WITH 3 WOMEN MAKES $588,000 A YEAR 80 PIMPS IN THE DC METRO AREA TOGETHER COULD MAKE UP TO $47,040,00 0 A YEAR

WHO ARE THE VICTIMS? ‣ Anyone ‣ Strangers, Friends, Family Members or Neighbors ‣ US Citizens and Foreign Nationals ‣ Males and Females ‣ Adults and Minors ‣ Any race ‣ All diverse socioeconomic backgrounds

WHO ARE THE TRAFFICKERS? ‣ Anyone ‣ Strangers, Friends, Partners, Family Members or Neighbors ‣ US Citizens and Foreign Nationals ‣ Males and Females ‣ Adults and Minors ‣ Any race ‣ Members of victim’s own ethnic or national background ‣ All diverse socioeconomic backgrounds

IN THE U.S., AN ESTIMATED 1.5 MILLION KIDS RUN AWAY FROM HOME EACH YEAR THE AVERAGE TIME IT TAKES A RUNAWAY TO BE APPROACHED BY A TRAFFICKER IS 48 HOURS

Every night between 3am and 6am a well-known section of K Street NW transforms into The Track, where sex trafficking victims are forced to meet quotas. If they fail or resist, they risk physical, verbal and emotional abuse from pimps. IT HAPPENS HERE IN WASHINGTON, DC.
