How Do We Become and Remain Free From Sin? Lesson 1 When We Are Baptized We Become Free From Sin

Introduction As a Christian, do you ever think it is impossible for you to overcome some habitual sins in your life? Long after we have been baptized, we can find ourselves continuing in various sins such as lust, fornication, anger, drinking, drugs, to name just a few Although we know these things are sinful, why do we continue practicing them?

Introduction Is it because we accept sin as “normal” and believe there is no way we can be free from these sins? But what does God’s Word teach that God has done for us and what we must do to become and remain free from sin?

Those Who Practice Sin Are Enslaved To Sin Including Christians Grace means unmerited favor Although we have chosen to sin against God, by His grace, He forgives us and sets us free from sin His grace does not free us so we may continue to sin, being enslaved to it Enslavement to sin, even for Christians, leads to spiritual death

Those Who Practice Sin Are Enslaved To Sin Including Christians Rom 6:1 What shall we say then? Are we to continue in sin so that grace may increase? Rom 6:2 May it never be! How shall we who died to sin still live in it?

Those Who Practice Sin Are Enslaved To Sin Including Christians Joh 8:31 So Jesus was saying to those Jews who had believed Him, "If you continue in My word, then you are truly disciples of Mine; Joh 8:32 and you will know the truth, and the truth will make you free."

Those Who Practice Sin Are Enslaved To Sin Including Christians Joh 8:33 They answered Him, "We are Abraham's descendants and have never yet been enslaved to anyone; how is it that You say, 'You will become free'?" Joh 8:34 Jesus answered them, "Truly, truly, I say to you, everyone who commits sin is the slave of sin.

We Can Choose Either To Sin or To Obey God 1Jn 3:4 Everyone who practices sin also practices lawlessness; and sin is lawlessness. 1Jn 3:5 You know that He appeared in order to take away sins; and in Him there is no sin. 1Jn 3:6 No one who abides in Him sins; no one who sins has seen Him or knows Him.

We Can Choose Either To Sin or To Obey God 1Jn 3:7 Little children, make sure no one deceives you; the one who practices righteousness is righteous, just as He is righteous; 1Jn 3:8 the one who practices sin is of the devil; for the devil has sinned from the beginning. The Son of God appeared for this purpose, to destroy the works of the devil.

We Can Choose Either To Sin or To Obey God 1Jn 3:9 No one who is born of God practices sin, because His seed abides in him; and he cannot sin, because he is born of God.

When We Sin It Is Our Fault Jas 1:13 Let no one say when he is tempted, "I am being tempted by God"; for God cannot be tempted by evil, and He Himself does not tempt anyone. Jas 1:14 But each one is tempted when he is carried away and enticed by his own lust. Jas 1:15 Then when lust has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and when sin is accomplished, it brings forth death.

Enslavement To Sin Leads To Spiritual Death Even For Christians 2Pe 2:19 promising them freedom while they themselves are slaves of corruption; for by what a man is overcome, by this he is enslaved. 2Pe 2:20 For if, after they have escaped the defilements of the world by the knowledge of the Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, they are again entangled in them and are overcome, the last state has become worse for them than the first.

Enslavement To Sin Leads To Spiritual Death Even For Christians 2Pe 2:21 For it would be better for them not to have known the way of righteousness, than having known it, to turn away from the holy commandment handed on to them. 2Pe 2:22 It has happened to them according to the true proverb, "A DOG RETURNS TO ITS OWN VOMIT," and, "A sow, after washing, returns to wallowing in the mire."

Enslavement To Sin Leads To Spiritual Death Even For Christians Rom 6:23 For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Some Blessings God Graciously Provides Through Jesus’ Death 1.Just punishment for our sins 2.Perfect example for us to follow 3.Forgiveness of our sins 4.Freedom from sin

Jesus’ Death Provides Just Punishment For Our Sins Rom 3:24 being justified as a gift by His grace through the redemption which is in Christ Jesus; Rom 3:25 whom God displayed publicly as a propitiation in His blood through faith. This was to demonstrate His righteousness, because in the forbearance of God He passed over the sins previously committed;

Jesus’ Death Provides Just Punishment For Our Sins Rom 3:26 for the demonstration, I say, of His righteousness at the present time, so that He would be just and the justifier of the one who has faith in Jesus.

Jesus’ Death Provides A perfect Example For Us To Follow 1Pe 2:21 For you have been called for this purpose, since Christ also suffered for you, leaving you an example for you to follow in His steps,

Jesus’ Death Provides Forgiveness of Sins Mat 26:28 for this is My blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for forgiveness of sins. Eph 1:7 In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of His grace

Jesus’ Death Provides Freedom From Sin 1Pe 3:18 For Christ also died for sins once for all, the just for the unjust, so that He might bring us to God, having been put to death in the flesh, but made alive in the spirit; 1Pe 2:24 and He Himself bore our sins in His body on the cross, so that we might die to sin and live to righteousness; for by His wounds you were healed.

When We Are Baptized God Forgives Our Sins and Frees Us From Sin By grace through Jesus’ death, God forgives our past sins and frees us from the bondage of sin When our faith leads us to repent of our sins, confess Jesus as the Son of God and be baptized, God forgives us our sins and frees us from sin

When We Are Baptized God Forgives Our Sins and Frees Us From Sin At baptism, we are crucified with Christ and die to sin so we might be raised to a new life, be slaves of righteousness Coming up from the water of baptism, a sinner dies and a saint is raised to walk in a new life

When We Are Baptized God Forgives Our Sins and Frees Us From Sin Act 2:36 "Therefore let all the house of Israel know for certain that God has made Him both Lord and Christ--this Jesus whom you crucified." Act 2:37 Now when they heard this, they were pierced to the heart, and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, "Brethren, what shall we do?"

When We Are Baptized God Forgives Our Sins and Frees Us From Sin Act 2:38 Peter said to them, "Repent, and each of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins; and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. Col 2:12 having been buried with Him in baptism, in which you were also raised up with Him through faith in the working of God, who raised Him from the dead.

When We Are Baptized God Forgives Our Sins and Frees Us From Sin Act 8:37 [And Philip said, "If you believe with all your heart, you may." And he answered and said, "I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God."] Act 8:38 And he ordered the chariot to stop; and they both went down into the water, Philip as well as the eunuch, and he baptized him.

When We Are Baptized God Forgives Our Sins and Frees Us From Sin Rom 6:3 Or do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus have been baptized into His death? Rom 6:4 Therefore we have been buried with Him through baptism into death, so that as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, so we too might walk in newness of life.

When We Are Baptized God Forgives Our Sins and Frees Us From Sin Rom 6:5 For if we have become united with Him in the likeness of His death, certainly we shall also be in the likeness of His resurrection, Rom 6:6 knowing this, that our old self was crucified with Him, in order that our body of sin might be done away with, so that we would no longer be slaves to sin; Rom 6:7 for he who has died is freed from sin.

To Remain Free From Sin We Must Continually Obey His Truth From The Heart Problem – we often emphasize forgiveness, ignoring being freed from sin so we can be enslaved to God We want to be forgiven but remain comfortable in our sins, not make any radical changes in our lives To remain free from sin, we must continue to love and obey the gospel, God’s Truth, from our hearts, behave as slaves of righteousness

To Remain Free From Sin We Must Continually Obey His Truth From The Heart Rom 6:15 What then? Shall we sin because we are not under law but under grace? May it never be! Rom 6:16 Do you not know that when you present yourselves to someone as slaves for obedience, you are slaves of the one whom you obey, either of sin resulting in death, or of obedience resulting in righteousness?

To Remain Free From Sin We Must Continually Obey His Truth From The Heart Rom 6:17 But thanks be to God that though you were slaves of sin, you became obedient from the heart to that form of teaching to which you were committed, Rom 6:18 and having been freed from sin, you became slaves of righteousness.

To Remain Free From Sin We Must Continually Obey His Truth From The Heart 1Jn 1:7 but if we walk in the Light as He Himself is in the Light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus His Son cleanses us from all sin. 1Jn 1:8 If we say that we have no sin, we are deceiving ourselves and the truth is not in us. 1Jn 1:9 If we confess our sins, He is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

When We Are Baptized We Become Free From Sin 1.Those who practice sin are enslaved to sin including Christians 2.Through Jesus’ death God forgives our sins and frees us from sin 3.When we are baptized God forgives our sins and frees us from sin 4.To remain free from sin we must continually obey His Truth from the heart
