Wake up and let’s get ready to learn!!!!!

How do you believe math and reading are related? In your opinion, which is more important?

Literature and Mathematics Why use Children’s literature in math?? –Motivates children to learn math in new and exciting ways –Encourages children to think and learn mathematically

Literature and Mathematics Using literature in mathematics: –Engages children in problem solving activities –Builds student’s appreciation for math and literature –It is another tool for us to try and teach those who continue to struggle with these concepts.

What is the Marilyn Burns Library??? It consists of five grade- level libraries. Grades K, 1, 2, 3, and 4-6. It is aligned to NCTM standards Each library contains: 25 titles - personally chosen by Marilyn Burns A teacher handbook Display case

Teacher’s Handbook Each manual provides explanations of title specific lessons covering essential math concepts and skills.

Handbook Continued Each handbook includes the following: –Why use Children’s books to teach Math. –How and why the books were chosen. –Lesson plans and how to use the books.

Handbook Continued. Teacher handbook contains: –Two page lesson for each title –Math content strands that are addressed in each lesson (measurement, number sense, problem solving, number operations, etc.) – Rationale for using children’s books to teach math.

Handbook Continued. –How lessons match standards and curriculums. –Five copies of certain titles. –24 different detailed lessons.

Where do I Start?? Wherever you want. Books are listed in alphabetical order. You can complete lessons in any order you choose.

What this program is. It is another method to try and inspire children to make the connections between reading and math and why both are equally important.

What this program is not!! It is not to replace our curriculum. It is not done everyday. It is not a cure all for teaching mathematics.
