Lesson Write Zeros in the Dividend M5N3 (d) Understand the relationships and rules for multiplication and division of whole numbers also apply to decimals.

Problem of the Day Carol has written a number pattern that begins with 1, 3, 6, 10, 15. If she continues this pattern, what are the next four numbers in her pattern? ______, ______, ______, _______

Spiral Review Divide Mentally ÷ ÷ ,400 ÷ ,000 ÷ ,000 ÷ 5

Vocabulary quotient divisor dividend The number outside of the division “ house ”. NOTE: the letter “ o ” is in the word divisor. “ Outside ” starts with the letter “ o ”. The number inside of the division house. NOTE: the word “ dividend ” sounds like it has the word “ in ” in it. So the “ dividend ” is “ in ” the division house. The answer in a division problem. The quotient goes on top of the division house.

Real Life Situations Need Math Help!! Jared is in a bind and needs our help in solving a problem! He has 6.2 pounds of Vidalia onions that he has to share with three other people! What can he do to determine how many pounds of onions everyone should be given?

Steps to solving the problem: Step 1: Think: “What is the problem asking me to do?” “I think it is asking me to divide 6.2 pounds of Vidalia onions by 4 because Jared has to share his onions with three other people. I need to include Jared as well as the three other people because he needs onions too!”

Steps Continued… Step 2: Write the problem out: Step 3: Think: “There is not a decimal in the divisor. There is only one in the dividend. So, I need to place my decimal in the quotient.” 4 6.2

Steps Continued… Step 4: Now that your problem is set up, solve it as if there was not a decimal in the problem NOTE: You can not have a remainder when dividing decimal numbers!

Steps Continued… Step 5: Add a zero to the dividend and keep dividing! When you reach 0, you are finished!

Now You Practice….
