Galatians 1:11-12 For I would have you know, brethren, that the gospel which was preached by me is not according to man. 12 For I neither received it from man, nor was I taught it, but I received it through a revelation of Jesus Christ. What Paul told them in these verses was almost certainly not new information, since he would have told them these things before. So Paul’s reasons for stating these points in this way was for an emphatic reminder. Paul didn’t need to have the apostles in Jerusalem tell him the gospel or have anyone teach him.

Galatians 1:11-12 For I would have you know, brethren, that the gospel which was preached by me is not according to man. 12 For I neither received it from man, nor was I taught it, but I received it through a revelation of Jesus Christ. We can tell from verses 6-10 that Paul was exceedingly concerned about the news that the believers in Galatia (Gentiles included!) had so quickly fallen under the burdensome Law of Moses. But that didn’t stop Paul from seeing that these people in whom he had invested his very life were brethren in Christ!

Galatians 1:11-12 For I would have you know, brethren, that the gospel which was preached by me is not according to man. 12 For I neither received it from man, nor was I taught it, but I received it through a revelation of Jesus Christ. The gospel which was preached by Paul was not in any way in conflict with that of the other apostles, but Paul indeed taught some truths that the other apostles apparently did not teach. And we’ll soon see (in this passage) why the gospel taught by Paul included unique & eternally precious teachings.

Galatians 1:11-12 For I would have you know, brethren, that the gospel which was preached by me is not according to man. 12 For I neither received it from man, nor was I taught it, but I received it through a revelation of Jesus Christ. What would you expect a gospel ‘according to man’ to be like? What would it include? What would it not include? Do we have a gospel, or gospels, according to man in this world right now?

Galatians 1:11-12 For I would have you know, brethren, that the gospel which was preached by me is not according to man. 12 For I neither received it from man, nor was I taught it, but I received it through a revelation of Jesus Christ. Paul did not receive the gospel from any mere human being. The word translated ‘received’ is in the active voice: Paul didn’t learn this from someone by his own initiative. Paul denied that he was taught it, as well. The Greek word translated ‘taught’ is in the passive voice: it was not just given to him.

Galatians 1:11-12 For I would have you know, brethren, that the gospel which was preached by me is not according to man. 12 For I neither received it from man, nor was I taught it, but I received it through a revelation of Jesus Christ. This is translated from the Greek word alla, which conveys “a strong contrast”. Unlike the idea that Paul got this gospel by pursuing the training of a rabbi (as he did with Gamaliel), or that this gospel was given to him by the motivation of another human being, Paul received it by an entirely different source…

Galatians 1:11-12 For I would have you know, brethren, that the gospel which was preached by me is not according to man. 12 For I neither received it from man, nor was I taught it, but I received it through a revelation of Jesus Christ. Paul received the spiritual insights that we see so magnificently conveyed through the direct & personal revelation of Jesus Christ! No middle man. No go between. Not from other humans nor angels nor via the Internet! Jesus Christ was the singular direct source of this glorious gospel that Paul was conveying.

Galatians 1:13-14 For you have heard of my former manner of life in Judaism, how I used to persecute the church of God beyond measure and tried to destroy it; 14 and I was advancing in Judaism beyond many of my contemporaries among my countrymen, being more extremely zealous for my ancestral traditions. Paul had told these believers in Galatia, & they may have heard from others as well, about Paul’s life back when he was Saul, the famously zealous Jew of the tribe of Benjamin, & a leading disciple of Gamaliel.

The Greek word that is translated ‘former’ (KJV: ‘in time past’) is pote. This word was used consistently by the authors of the New Testament to refer to the time, life & position of the believers before they were saved. Paul next outlined the ‘low points’ of his former life.

Take note that Paul did not refer to his former manner of life as ‘the truth’, ‘the true religion’, or anything like that. He called it ‘Judaism’, which was the Law of Moses loaded down, distorted, & made shallow, elevating some to power & victimizing others (see Matthew 23).

Paul’s persecution of the church, as Saul, was first recorded in Acts 7:58. In Acts 9:1, Dr. Luke wrote, “Now Saul, still breathing threats and murder against the disciples of the Lord…”. He was not just a bit irritated with the Christians – Saul wanted them very dead!

Paul’s qualifications in Judaism by his birth, his training & by every other measure were superlative. Paul was climbing the ladder of ‘success’ & prestige most admirably, by any standard accepted in Judaism (Philippians 3:4-6). Paul was a ‘rising star’ in Judaism.

Now ‘zeal’ is already an extreme word – right? But Paul wants to make sure we know that he was way, way beyond ‘pedal to the metal’. As for his Judaism, Paul wrote that he was “more extremely zealous”! Wow!

For Saul, it was not a matter of just carrying on the Law given to Moses 1400 years before. Saul was full on, full out & then some about the traditions that had accumulated alongside of & on top of the Law over 14 long centuries.

Galatians 1:15-17 But when God, who had set me apart even from my mother's womb and called me through His grace, was pleased 16 to reveal His Son in me so that I might preach Him among the Gentiles, I did not immediately consult with flesh and blood, 17 nor did I go up to Jerusalem to those who were apostles before me; but I went away to Arabia, and returned once more to Damascus. Paul was fond of writing “but God…” as a divine turning point in his writings. After he described what happened among unsaved people, he would then say what God did, & it was always radical! Here he inserted “when’

God had set Paul apart from his mother’s womb, yet for a few decades he grew to be ‘more extremely zealous’ - to the point of killing those who loved our Lord! Saul (later called ‘Paul’) would not believe for years!

Paul had previously written something very similar to those same churches in Galatians 1:6, “…Him who called you by the grace of Christ…”. In truth, it was by the grace of Christ that every single one of us was called.

From 2 Timothy 1:8-9 …God, 9 who has saved us and called us with a holy calling, not according to our works, but according to His own purpose and grace which was granted us in Christ Jesus from all eternity… From 1 Peter 5:10 …the God of all grace, who called you to His eternal glory in Christ… The gospel was given to Paul by grace: Paul did not in any way merit or earn the privilege of receiving & conveying the gospel.

The revelation that Paul received from the Lord was not passed along superficially. Paul was Christ’s special messenger by reason of his being personally transformed by its message – transforming grace within!

The gospel that Paul was privileged to preach was not simply a mass of ‘generic spiritual information’. Paul was preaching a person – Christ! “For indeed Jews ask for signs and Greeks search for wisdom; 23 but we preach Christ crucified…” 1 Corinthians 1:22-23a

When Saul (later called Paul) became a believer, another believer named Ananias came to his aid in Damascus, but Ananias did not pass along any major teaching to him. No human being did.

Paul did not need to consult with the other apostles to be informed & commissioned as an apostle to the Gentile lands. Paul’s personal teaching & commissioning as an apostle came directly from Jesus Christ!

________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________

Next week: Galatians 1:18-24 The rest of the story Then three years later I went up to Jerusalem to become acquainted with Cephas, and stayed with him fifteen days. 19 But I did not see any other of the apostles except James, the Lord's brother. 20 (Now in what I am writing to you, I assure you before God that I am not lying.) 21 Then I went into the regions of Syria and Cilicia. 22 I was still unknown by sight to the churches of Judea which were in Christ; 23 but only, they kept hearing, "He who once persecuted us is now preaching the faith which he once tried to destroy." 24 And they were glorifying God because of me.

There are some definite parallels between Paul’s history, as outlined in these verses, & your own history. But don’t worry – you might not have to go away to Arabia.

What God has done & is doing in you But when God… Set you apart Called you - through His grace Pleased to reveal His Son in you So that you might… Him – Christ! God will always be preparing you ___________________________ ___________________________ ___________________________ ___________________________ ___________________________ ___________________________ ___________________________
