The Element Zirconium

2- Element Name: Zirconium 3- Atomic Number: 40 4- Atomic Mass: 91.224 Facts: 1- Element Symbol: Zr 2- Element Name: Zirconium 3- Atomic Number: 40 4- Atomic Mass: 91.224 5- It’s a Solid 6- It’s a Metal 7- Family Group 4 8- Martin Klaproth Found It In the Year1789 In Germany

Corrosion resistant used in high performance pumps and valves. 9 - Whats It Used For? Zirconium has many uses do to its many properties. Corrosion resistant used in high performance pumps and valves. It doesn’t absorb neutrons so its used in nuclear reactors, cause if they did absorb the neutrons the fission reactions couldn’t work. In fact the nuclear power plant uses 90% of Zirconium produced each year. Zirconium is also used as an agent in alloying steel, to make surgical equiptment.

Other uses: zircon And Zirconia Zircon (Zirconium Silicate) - A type of zirconium after its turned into a compound. Zirconia (Zirconium Oxide) – Another type of compound Zircon is able to take high temperatures of heat withought cracking or breaking, so its used in Molds for metals, Or Inside Ovens and Furnaces. Zircon and Zirconia are both used for abrasives Zircon is also known to be used as a “diamond” in jewelry. As well as making objects opaque, where light will not pass through them. Such as a glaze for pottery, add the zircon or zirconia will make no light shine through and make it white.

10 – Physical and Chemical properties Zirconium has many useful physical properties, as well as chemical. Physical: It has a high melting point of 3,375°F Its dense properties allow it for hard surfaces. Chemical: Zirconium is transparent to atoms.

Zirconium Carbonate can be used in lotions to treat poison ivy. Unusual Facts Zirconium Carbonate can be used in lotions to treat poison ivy. Also Zirconium is used in deodorant but it can cause skin rashes.

So that concludes the information given on Zirconium. Its useful and provides us with many things from Jewelry to Ovens to Nuclear Reators.
