As part of our Geography work, Year 5 find out about Chichester – A Place to Live. We had 2 mobile phones with special software so that we could send photos to a website. In school, we can look at the photos and text messages on the website. We can send text messages to the photographers on the trail in Chichester. We had some clues to solve so that we could find out more about Chichester which is a Roman city and has a beautiful cathedral. The photographers in Chichester sent us photos when we had decided which pictures we wanted them to take. To use this presentation, you need PowerPoint 2002 or later so that the animations will work. On each page, try to solve the clues, then click the mouse to see if you are right. To read each group’s review of their work, click on the question mark which is on every page. The new wing will have a shop, café,Learning Space and a Reading Room.It will also have a beautiful garden. The House was the first of its style in Chichester, and was regarded as very modern in its day. There are two birds on pillars at the front of the house. Our Clues.Look in the entrance hall.

The old Shippams Factory Where is this place? It is at 48 East Street. What is happening? They are knocking down the old Shippams factory. What is going to happen? It is going to be a big shopping centre with all sorts of shops in it. Can you find out something about the firm? One of the most important families in Chichester was the Shippam Family. The first business was a grocery run by Charles Shippam at Westgate. It opened in In 1851 Charles Shippam III started up a butchers shop in East Street. The first female staff went to Shippams in During the later part of the 20 th century new ranges were introduced. The last member of the Shippams family retired. Shippams are famous for meat pastes. Our clues

The Roman Temple The original stone carving attached to the wall on the assembly rooms, says the temple was dedicated to the Goddess Minerva, daughter of the God Jupiter. It is also in honour of King Togidubnus who lived in Fishbourne Palace. The Roman Temple used to be in the street we now call North Street. The Assembly rooms are where the council have meetings and discuss about Chichester. Our clues:

Every Roman city had a public bath where people washed themselves. Along with the baths were sports centres and Beauty Parlours, where the ladies would go to get their nails, hair and their faces done. At the public baths there were several pools at different temperatures. They plunged in the Frigidarium after they had come out of a hot Bath. This is a picture of the car park where the Roman Baths used to be. (car park behind Army and Navy)

Chichester bell tower The bell tower has 8 bells. It is also is used as a storing place for the cathedral shop’s products. The Bell Tower was built in the 15 th century. It is special because it is the only one of its kind remaining in England. It holds eight bells in its centre. OUR CLUES

Our Clues Marc Chagall designed the window in the cathedral, it was based on Psalm 150:”Oh praise God in his holiness…let everything that hath breath praise the lord.” Mark Chagall was born in Russia in 1887 to a poor Jewish family. He was the oldest of 9 children. He went to Paris in 1910 for 4 years. His paintings were full of bright powerful colours.

The Piper Tapestry in the Cathedral was designed by John Piper and was woven in France in 1996.The central subject is the Trinity (Father, Son and the Holy Spirit). On each side there are symbols of the elements such as sun, wind and rain, as well as symbols of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. It is behind the main altar in the choir room. l Our clues
