Birds of a Feather - Realism Mindi Anderson, PhD, RN, CPNP-PC, ANEF Assistant Professor The University of Texas at Arlington, College of Nursing

 Making simulations “real-enough” is important to consider (Anderson & Ackermann, n. d.)  Extends to students learning how to do simulation within a master’s level course, Simulation Application in Nursing (Anderson, 2010) Problem/Opportunity

 Added lecture on realism  Students have an opportunity to take the Simulation Innovation Resource Center (SIRC) on-line course on Maximizing Realism (Anderson & Ackermann, n. d.). Solution

 Use moulage (makeup) (Anderson & Ackermann, n. d.).  Students have a day where they make “vomit”  Different supplies/recipe cards  Students vote = best recipe Solution

Making Moulage “Emesis”

 Practice making bruises  Various paints  Vote on best  Watch staining!!!  Might use spare parts (Anderson & Ackermann, n. d.) Solution

Making Moulage “Bruises”

 Consider:  Participant senses  Standardized patients  Instructor attitude/behavioral guidelines  Hybrids  Appropriate roles within simulation (Anderson & Ackermann, n. d.). Other Ways- Increase Realism

 Realistic simulation scenarios  Students have “fun” while learning Outcome
