Additional Information Puritans and Pilgrims were different societies many tend to generalize them into the same group but they had different concepts and Ideas The Puritans founded Harvard which was named after John Harvard and was intended the school to teach religious doctrine When studying they believed they needed to learn about science and nature to gain knowledge about God's creations

Who Were The Puritans The puritans were a group of English Protestants in the 16th and 17th century. They protested because they wanted to be apart of the original religious group so the king of England signed a document allowing them to start a colony in the Americas. They started a theocracy which means the state and the religion are not separate and the society is ruled by religion. Their goal was a “perfect society”.

What is Predestination? The divine forgoing of all that will happen, especially with regard to the salvation of some and not others. Behaviors and Duties of Puritan Children Children were expected to behave under the same strict rules of the adults Examples: attend church services, do chores, and repress individual differences meaning they weren’t allowed to express themselves in a creative or unique way Expressions of emotions like fear, excitement, and anger was frowned upon. Children were not allowed to play games or own toys because the adults believed they were sinful distractions Disobedience was punished severely Children were meant to be seen and not heard

Why Did the Puritans Come to the New world? The group of people called the puritans came to America from Europe to reform the Church of England. They wanted to be the most pure and perfect society in the world. They were looking for the freedom to worship the in a way they felt was the correct one. They wanted to set up a theocratic state, or one that was ruled by god.

Puritan Government Therocracy - Government is not seperate from the church if you disobey the law you also disobey the church They believed if they searched the scripture they would find the solution. The parish (Elected church ministers) was the main group. Two branches of government Presbyterianism (favored central church government) Congregationalism (thought one should be able to come to its own conclusion in religion)

Puritan Education A reason that they left England is because they were afraid of education system giving the children negative influences about religion Boys were provided a well rounded education for they were an essential part of the colonists dream of the future Girls were not allowed to attend In the south there were no formal schoolhouses, schooling took place at home in the Middle Colonies they had Authoritarian Schools that taught practical studies such as reading writing and Bible studies.

Important Info in Understanding The Crucible We believe having the knowledge of understanding how Puritans lived and examining the type of “perfect society” they were trying to create helps readers/audiences of The Crucible to have a better understanding of why the characters act the way they do. Also it helps set the scene better if one knows how the Puritans go about their everyday lives and readers might be able to view the story through Puritan eyes and like I said before understand why the paranoia of witches and witchcraft caused such a massive panic through Puritan society and had such a historical impact. Looking at the Salem witch trials with the sight of an outsider makes it seem like such a idiotic thing that could happen but once you understand that these people really believed in predestination and fate, helps illuminate their utmost fear, the Devil and going to Hell.
