Objective: To discuss the reasons for the Puritan’s settlement in America and to examine their way of life. Do Now: Think about the short power point we just watched, and answer the following questions: - How did the ideas in the power point make you feel? Did you they make you feel good about yourself, or bad? Did they make you want to pray, and generally be religious? - What is the name for the religious belief demonstrated in that power point?

Roman Catholic Church Protestants Baptists Presbyterians Episcopalians Lutherans Church of England Puritans Separatists (Pilgrims) Puritans – a group of English Protestants that tried to simplify the Church of England in the 1600’s.

Quick Review of the Major Religious Influences in the American Colonies Virginia: Anglican—a.k.a. Church of England Massachusetts: Puritans—a.k.a. Calvinists or Congregationalists; Pilgrims at Plymouth were Separatists (i.e. no longer part of the Anglican Church) Maryland: Roman Catholic Pennsylvania: Quaker New York (originally New Netherland): Dutch Reform (i.e. Calvinists)

English dissenters saw America as a place where they could worship freely! Dissent – to disagree England persecuted everyone that refused to agree with the Church of England. Ex.) Puritans, Separatists, Catholics Persecute – to mistreat

The Puritans wanted to reform the Church of England. -do away with Catholic traditions, such as organ music and special clothes for priests. - do away with the fancy decorations of the Catholic Church - do away with the idea that people needed to go through a priest to talk to God. Puritans believe that ordinary people could converse directly with God. reform - to change Examples: - simpler forms of worship

John Winthrop was the leader of the Puritans.

In 1629, the Puritans were granted a charter to form the Massachusetts Bay Company.

Relations With Native Americans: - Fighting increased as the Puritans settled on Native American land. A village militia muster in Massachusetts Bay Colony, circa 1637.

- dancing and games were disapproved of, and illegal on the Sabbath. Values: - religion and education were very important. - The Puritans worked very hard at farming, fishing, and hunting in order to become successful. Hard Work:

The Puritans were single-minded visionaries convinced of the rightness of their beliefs, but they were also practical and businesslike. Many Puritans were persecuted for their beliefs and fled England for Holland and, ultimately, for North America Many historians feel that the Puritan ethics of thrift, hard work, and self – sufficiency contributed to the success of the New World.

Puritan Beliefs Puritans believed that Adam and Eve’s sin had damned most people for all eternity. They also believed that Jesus Christ had been sent to earth to save particular people, known as the “elect”. It was difficult to know for certain if one was saved or damned, so Puritans tried to behave in as exemplary a manner as possible. Puritans believed that the Bible was the literal word of God. Reading the Bible was a necessity for all Puritans, as was the ability to understand theological debates (this meant ALL children learned to read).

The Bible provided a model for Puritan writing: a conception of each individual life as a journey to salvation. Puritans saw direct connections between Biblical events and their lives. Puritans used writing to explore their inner and outer lives for signs of the workings of God. Diaries and histories were the most common forms of expression in Puritan society; in them writers described their workings of God. Puritans favored plain style, which stressed clear expression and avoided complicated figures of speech (you might say that Puritans “kept it real”). Characteristics of Puritan Writing

Predestination Strong work ethic Literacy and education Community effort (as opposed to individualism) Man’s natural sinfulness God’s omnipotence Wilderness (forest) as the devil’s province (Puritans saw nature as God’s creation but feared the disorder of the frontier and viewed Indians as savages.) Puritan values found in Puritan Literature

- stress Witches were blamed as scapegoats for the Puritans problems, such as: scapegoat - one that receives the blame for others. - sinners or sinful behaviors - smallpox - Native Americans -The Puritans wanted Massachusetts to be a "City on the Hill“ (an exemplary city for others to look up to). -Unfortunately, it was very difficult to be a good Puritan. Not everyone was able to follow all the rules, all the time.
