THE HOSPITALITY OF ABRAHAM Penge Baptist Church 4 th December 2011

Genesis 18:1-9 The LORD appeared to Abraham near the great trees of Mamre while he was sitting at the entrance to his tent in the heat of the day. Abraham looked up and saw three men standing nearby. When he saw them, he hurried from the entrance of his tent to meet them and bowed low to the ground. He said, “ If I have found favor in your eyes, my lord, do not pass your servant by. Let a little water be brought, and then you may all wash your feet and rest under this tree.

Let me get you something to eat, so you can be refreshed and then go on your way — now that you have come to your servant. ” “ Very well, ” they answered, “ do as you say. ” So Abraham hurried into the tent to Sarah. “ Quick, ” he said, “ get three seahs of fine flour and knead it and bake some bread. ” Then he ran to the herd and selected a choice, tender calf and gave it to a servant, who hurried to prepare it. He then brought some curds and milk and the calf that had been prepared, and set these before them. While they ate, he stood near them under a tree.

Abraham as our model Hospitality is focused on others Hospitality is sensitive to guests ’ feelings Hospitality has top priority Hospitality is lavish Abraham was blessed Encounter with God News of a child God listened to Abraham about Sodom

Jesus and hospitality Then Jesus said to his host, “ When you give a luncheon or dinner, do not invite your friends, your brothers or relatives, or your rich neighbors; if you do, they may invite you back and so you will be repaid. But when you give a banquet, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, the blind, and you will be blessed. Although they cannot repay you, you will be repaid at the resurrection of the righteous. ” (Luke 14:12)

For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me. ’ “ Then the righteous will answer him, ‘ Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink? When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you? When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you? ’ “ The King will reply, ‘ I tell you the truth, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me. ’ (Matthew 25:35-40)

Hospitality in the early church Share with God ’ s people who are in need. Practice hospitality. (Romans 12:13) Offer hospitality to one another without grumbling. (1 Peter 4:9) Do not forget to entertain strangers, for by so doing some people have entertained angels without knowing it. (Hebrews 13:2)

Why is hospitality important? Stewardship Imitating God Grace God himself is the stranger Turns strangers into friends Worship, discipleship, ministry, evangelism, community!

The Greatest Commandments “ The most important one, ” answered Jesus, “ is this: ‘ Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is one. Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength. ’ The second is this: ‘ Love your neighbor as yourself. ’ There is no commandment greater than these. ” (Mark 12:29-31)
