Healthy Church Workshop HOSPITALITY

Healthy Church Workshop: HOSPITALITY Agenda HCI Warm Up – Church Web of Support What Is Radical Hospitality? (Part 1) What Is Radical Hospitality? (Part 2) What Does the Bible Say? Break What Can You Do?

HCI Purpose: To help visualize the power of individuals and the power of church communities in building strong hospitality and relationships. LET’S PLAY!!!! Church Web of Support Warm Up

HCI Questions: What does this show about the power of individuals? What happened when some people decided they had done enough (stop participating)? What does this show about the power of a church community? What would it take to create a strong CHURCH web of support for all youth, young adults, and senior members? What will you remember from this exercise tomorrow? Warm Up Church Web of Support

HOSPITALITY What Does the Bible Say? 2 Don’t forget to show hospitality to believers you don’t know. By doing this some believers have shown hospitality to angels without being aware of it. Hebrews 13:2, God’s WORD 35 For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, 36 I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.’ 37 “Then the righteous will answer him, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink? 38 When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you? 39 When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you?’ 40 “The King will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’ Matthew 25:35-40, NIV HCI

HOSPITALITY Methodists Early Start John Wesley preach to thousands on the roadsides, fields and invited them into community. John Wesley 33 By God’s grace! Grace! 2 1 Early Methodist practiced hospitality in ways that many leaders founds their activities offensive.

Questions and Answers – Planning What Does the Bible Say? HCI Five Practices – Radical Hospitality Workbook by Robert Schnase What are three or four key entry points through which new people are most likely to connect with your congregation? What makes these attractive and inviting? What could you do to make it even more inviting? How does your church invite people? How Does Your Congregation Welcome People? How Did You First Become a Part of This Congregation? tHow well are parking areas marked? Does the lot look inviting? Are signs in and around the building clear, informative, readable? Think about how it feels to approach your church for the first time…. How did you hear about it? Who invited you? What was your first experience walking into the church building? What was helpful and what was confusing to you?

HCI What is Radical Hospitality? RADICAL Radical means “drastically different from ordinary practice, outside the norm.” “ Welcome one another, therefore, just as Christ has welcomed you, for the glory of God.” – Romans 15:7

PRACTICE INITIATIVE HCI HOSPITALITY IS….. What is Radical Hospitality? PRAYER HABIT WORK.

HCI 10 Minutes BREAK TIME! Take 10 minutes to re-fresh yourself and come back ready to get started again!

People need to know God loves them. People need to know the peace. People need to know that life is not having something to live on but something to live for. People need to know that they are not alone. People need to know how to offer and accept forgiveness and how to serve and be served. People need a sustaining sense of purpose. HCI What do people need that congregations offer? What is Radical Hospitality?

HCI Let’s Chat for a Minute Questions to Help You Every community, church, or group of friends has “DOORS” where new people seem to come in. Are the doors of your congregation open? How easy is it to come in the frind a place? How do people hear about your church most often? Think of all the ways someone in your community might hear or learn about the church? Extending the Invitation: Think about your community and all you have to offer to it within your congregation. Can you list two or three groups of people in your area that are waiting to be invited to the congregation? What are they like? What might they need? What could you offer?

HCI What Can We Do? A woman was going through a rough time in her personal and professional life; and in her search for connections, hope, and direction, she began to visit a few churches. After her first two worship experiences to which she came alone, sat alone, and left alone without anyone speaking to her or greeting her, her prayer for her next visit to another church service was simply, “I only pray that someone speaks to me today!” Here is a story…… Five Practices – Radical Hospitality Workbook by Robert Schnase

HCI Churches aspiring to Radical Hospitality must ask: What Can We Do? How are we doing to inviting guest and at teaching people to invite others? How are we doing at helping people find their way into our congregation? How are we doing at genuinely and autherntically welcoming people? How are we doing as a congregation, as a Sunday school class, in our worship service, and mission projects? What are we doing to help people who are unfamiliar with us to feel at home? How can we offer Radical Hospitality we see in the life, teachings, death, and resurrection of Christ? How can we do better?
