Automation of Terminology tasks using T-Manager Rafael Guzmán Symantec LRC Conference, 2 October 2008

Agenda Introduction to terminology tasks –Terminology tools and repositories –Good quality: nice to have or critical? –Problems –How T-Manager can assist T-Manager DEMO

Many different terminology tools Many different terminology repositories & tools:

Good quality: nice to have or critical? Terminology good-quality and controlled terminology: –Very important for human translation –Critical for rule-based Machine Translation (MT) –Achieved through different tasks: Consolidation (duplicates, deprecated terms) Metrics reports Customisation Validation Synchronisation (between 2 dictionaries) Harvesting / Leveraging

Problems Tools tend to focus on “just” some tasks Limited flexibility for customisation to different needs No appropriate comparison criteria, no good quality: Manual tasks: time-consuming and prone to errors Leading/Trailing spaces “Noises” (linguistic clues, trade marks and punctuation signs, hotkeys) POS values (noun, verb, adverb, adjective...) Case (sensitive or insensitive)

How T-Manager can assist T-Manager T-Manager: –Flexible Tools companion –automates comparison criteria and terminology tasks Leading/Trailing spaces “Noises” (linguistic clues, trade marks and punctuation signs, hotkeys) POS values (noun, verb, adverb, adjective...) Case (sensitive or insensitive) Consolidation Metrics reports Customisation Validation Synchronisation Harvesting / Leveraging

Agenda Introduction to terminology tasks T-Manager DEMO –diagnosing a glossary or TM –comparing two dictionaries –converting a glossary into a Systran dictionary T-Manager

Conclusion Terminology quality is critical for rule-based MT Terminology tasks require: –flexible technology –consistent comparison criteria –automation T-Manager –Companion tool that helps to automate terminology comparison criteria and typical tasks –Easily customisable and open to creativity –Freeware: T-Manager
