Adverbs are traditionally defined as words that describe verbs. But they can also modify adjectives or other adverbs.verbs Adverbs answer any of the following questions about verbs: how? when? where? why?

 Adverbs are the most moveable of all parts of speech; therefore, it is sometimes difficult to identify an adverb on the basis of its position in a sentence.  For example, the adverb slowly will fit into three places in the sentence. He climbed the ladder slowly. He slowly climbed the ladder. Slowly he climbed the ladder.

 The 8:45 train arrived early.  The football player threw the ball hard.  Herman easily lifted the barbell over his head.  We will use the new software program tomorrow.

 The quarterback threw a hard pass to the receiver.  It was a terribly hot afternoon.  The tough professor gave us the final exam.  She sang beautifully during the opening chorus.

Prepositions show relationship. They show how a noun or pronoun is related to another word or word group in a sentence. If it has an object, it’s a preposition, if it doesn’t, it’s an adverb.  Billy ran up the stairs.  Billy looked up and saw the alien spacecraft.  Aunt Gertrude lives around the corner.  I'm sure I've seen that clever lobster before.  Hang my diploma just above the portrait of my hamster.
