Personal Brand Essence The essence of you perceived by those you care about

#1 Sign You Have Terrible People Skills Salary.com 3/28/13 1. Lack of Networking/Self-Promotion Skills How do people know how great you are? Encourage people to be in your network by attending the right industry events, reaching out to the right individuals, and engaging them in interesting conversation that brands you as an expert. Learn how to subtly, yet effectively, promote your work results, knowledge, and skills by keeping in touch with people who have influence. When you begin to influence people who have influence, you have set yourself up to succeed.

The Keys to a strong Brand Essence The core of your personal brand lies in how you make others feel, when you are being the “real you.” Begin with the end in mind – Stephen Covey Who you are: Strengths & Values How do you want people to feel about themselves and about you? What do you need to do to make them think feel that way about you?

The Ultimate Brand Repositioning Project: What can Phil Connors teach us about personal branding? 12

Introducing the Brand Essence Wheel Simple tool Build it from the outside-in and inside-out Start with a self exploration of who you are. Ask yourself who you want to be. Resources: Many books available. Consider a half-day self-directed single-person workshop.

Source Material Be your own Brand – McNally & Speak The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People - Covey Strength Finder Rath Discover Who You Are – Kise, Stark & Hirsch

Personal Brand Essence How this person makes me look How this person makes me feel How I would describe the person What the person does for me

16 How the Person Makes me Feel How the Person Makes me Look 16 How I would describe the Person What the person does for me Facts & Symbols Brand Personality SAMPLE Brand Essence Wheel Cold-calls customers Gets Stuff Done Results-Driven Balanced Leader MBA X-years of Experience Classical Brand Experience Analyzes Data Current Job Reliable Easy-to-smile Family Man On top of my game Plan-oriented Savvy Confident Noun 1 Noun 2 Noun 3 Well Cared For MBTI: In Control Strengths Finder: Relational

You have a personal brand essence today Fact: you already have a personal brand. – Is it strong or weak? Three characteristics of a strong brand – Unique (what can I do, be, or own that no one else can) – Relevant (impactful emotionally and rationally to people I care about) – Consistent (over time, brands either strengthen or deteriorate - Billy Graham v Tiger Woods) Brand Strength ≠ Everyone likes me. – Know what you stand for – Know what you will NOT stand for.

Action Suggestions Personal Brand Essence is not a “one-and-done” exercise. Good brands evolve and strengthen over time. Set aside time annually to review your personal brand essence Review your brand essence with someone you care about and trust Consider creating two Brand Essence Wheels – One professional and one personal. – Wheels must be compatible. Use 360 feedback to understand your current brand essence. Use prayer, focus, and meditation to develop your future brand essence. Become the brand God wants you to be.
