General Monitor Info! By Merk and Cody!

Glowy-ness Actually known as Luminance, which is an indicator of how bright the surface will appear. Since human vision is more sensitive to luminance ("black and white") detail than color detail, video systems can optimize bandwidth for luminance over color.

Refresh Rate Refresh Rate Ever wonder why monitors on video footage always look like the picture to the right? That’s caused by the refresh rate. The number of times in a second that a display is illuminated Ever wonder why monitors on video footage always look like the picture to the right? That’s caused by the refresh rate. The number of times in a second that a display is illuminated. CRT= the scan rate is controlled by the vertical sync signal sent from the graphics card, ordering the monitor to position the electron gun at the upper left corner of the raster, ready to paint another frame. Limited by maximum horizontal scan rate and the resolution, since higher resolution means more scan lines. Increasing the refresh rate decreases flickering, reducing eye strain. LCD= LCD cells open to pass a stream of light, and do not dim until made to produce a darker color therefore they do not pertain to refresh rate.

V-Sync V-Sync V-Sync – Vertical Synchronization Monitors are refreshed sequentially and on older CRT based displays, a short delay is required between updating the lowest horizontal line of the display and returning to refresh the highest, this is dubbed V-Sync. As you can see below it looks like the player (CS left, HL right) has V-sync disabled therefore the top of his screen looks like its sliced off and moved.

Size Size First off, the size of a monitor is measured in the diagonal length, not vertically or horizontally. Second, the size you hear that the monitor is, may not necessarily be the size you’re thinking of. The size you would want is the size of the actual screen. The size that may be measured is that of the full monitor, including the plastic siding. View the pictures to the right for a graphical example of this.

Dot Pitch Dot Pitch Dot pitch, which can also be referred to as "line pitch" or "phosphor pitch" describes the distance between phosphor dots or LCD cells of the same color. The dot pitch is the size of the triads as well as the distance between the triads. Each triad shows up as one pixel. For more information on pixel, view the slide about the monitor size. Basically the size of the smallest dot (pixel) your screen can display. Dot pitch is usually given as a fraction of a millimeter, such as 0.28 mm or 0.35 mm. The smaller the dot pitch, the crisper the images are on the screen, but the more the screen costs.

CRT/Plasma/LCD CRT/Plasma/LCD CRT - Cathode Ray Tube -Bulky but relatively cheaper then other monitors. - Maintains power after being unplugged - For this reason, never try to open up a CRT monitor. LCD - Liquid Crystal Display thin, flat display device made up of any number of color or monochrome pixels arrayed in front of a light source or reflector. LCD - Liquid Crystal Display thin, flat display device made up of any number of color or monochrome pixels arrayed in front of a light source or reflector. Limited viewing angle. Hi-Res computer displays use (TFT’s) (Thin Film Transistors) meaning that each pixel gets its own transistor therefore all of the lines created by this are activated during a refresh operation. Plasma Display Panel - is an emissive flat panel display where visible light is created by phosphors excited by a plasma discharge between two flat panels of glass. Gas discharge contains no mercury (contrary to the backlights of an active matrix LCD); an inert mixture of noble gases (neon and xenon) is used. One of the cons is that if an image stays on the screen to long it can burn in, and you will see the same image for the time you own the Plasma, but modern plasmas claim that burning in an image does not happen anymore and can be eliminated with 1 hour of setting the TV on a grainy channel.

Extraneous Stuff Extraneous Stuff Random Facts - Screen savers are your friend! They prevent the image on your monitor from being burned into it. If that happens, you might as well get a new one since you’ll be seeing that image for a while. - Pixels are the smallest dot that computer graphics are displayed with. Take for example a emoticon, those are typically 20x20 pixels. -- Pixel stands for “Picture Element”. The Emoticon on the bottom is the regular sized one. The one on the top is blown up to 10 times it’s normal size. Using the + shaped eyes as an example, each part of the + including the top, bottom, sides, and middle, are all one pixel.

Using your television as a monitor First off, you must make sure that both your computer and TV have an S-Video port on them. Second, you must have an S-Video cable. After meeting these two simple requirements, you then plug the S-Video cable into both your TV and your monitor. From there you then press and hold the "Fn" (Function) key, and then press the "F5" key. This should bring up something similar to the "alt + tab" command, it works the same way, you simply press the "F5" key while holding down the function key to move from option to option. There should be three options, the first is to have your single monitor that your computer uses by default. The second option is to use both the first and secondary monitor. The third and final option is to use just the secondary monitor, which would make your primary monitor screen go black and the second one would have the display on it. In order to get the display on your television to work properly, you might need to go through a few of the video settings (Usually using the "input" button on your remote or television controls) until you find the one displaying it. It shows up on my television on the Video 3 input.

Touchscreen Monitors Just as the name implies, Touchscreen monitors are screens that operate by touching the monitor rather than moving a mouse to select things. Touchscreens are commonly used in car computer systems such as GPS. LCD's aren't the only type of monitors that can be touchscreen monitors, there are some CRT touchscreen monitors out there. Touchscreens are typically seen in applicances such as PDA's (Personal Digital Assistants), GPS (Global Positioning System), and the Nintendo DS (Dual Screen).
