The Odyssey Monologue PEER REVIEW POWERPOINT

Monologue Peer Review ROUND 1 – The Requirements Epithets An epithet is a creative, descriptive nick name for a character Does the monologue include 3 epithets? Highlight each epithet. If there are not 3 epithets, then suggest a place to add an epithet. Write *add epithet here Epic/Homeric Simile An epic simile compares to different things using like/as over several lines of text Does the monologue include an epic simile? Highlight the epic simile. If there is no epic simile, then suggest a place to add one. Write *add simile here. Is the simile EPIC? Is it extended over several lines? Note on their paper if it is not (*not long enough) and suggest ideas how they might extend it. References to The Odyssey The monologue MUST be connected to The Odyssey (before, during, or after) Does the monologue connect? Put a smiley face and a note at the top. If it doesn’t connect, put a sad face and a note/ideas about connecting.

Monologue Peer Review ROUND II – Hook & Button Closing HOOK A hook grabs the readers attention right from the start. Does the monologue include a hook? Highlight and label the hook. If there is not a hook, then suggest ideas for one on their monologue. Is the hook effective? Do they just introduce the character or does it interest you right from the start? Note this on the monologue. BUTTON CLOSING A button closing neatly wraps the monologue so we know it is over by neatly tying it all back together. Does the monologue include a button closing? Highlight the concluion. If there is no button closing, then suggest ideas or note to add one. Is the closing effective? Does it cleverly end the monologue or is it abrupt? Note this on the monologue.

Monologue Peer Review ROUND 1II – Content (I head, noticed, wondered Form) I heard… Summarize what you think the pieces is about. Tell the writer what you saw as the story or the main idea. Write this on the form. As the writer: listen to this section, and try to hear whether or not you communicated what you were trying to communicate. I noticed… Tell the author about some of the things that attracted your attention. What worked well? What details seemed striking? What will you remember about this paper? Write this on the form. As the writer: think about why the reviewer noticed these things, and how you can make all your writing as effective. I wondered… Did you have any questions? Did you not understand what something meant, or why it was included? Did something bother you? Did you suspect something might have worked better another way? Write this on the form. As the writer: try to answer the reviewer’s questions. Look at your writing again, and see if there is any way to make those points clearer.

Monologue Peer Review ROUND 1V – Fine Tooth Comb Grammar, Usage, Mechanics (GUM)  Subject Verb Agreement  Pronoun-Antecedent Agreement/ Pronoun Reference  Passive Voice  Complete sentences  Punctuation (commas, periods, apostrophes)  Spelling Comb through the monologue looking for errors. Circle them, write a note about them, or even fix them.

Monologue Peer Review ROUND V – REVISIONS Now it’s your turn! Use all the feedback on your rough draft and on the peer review form to make revisions to your monologue. Go back and make changes on your rough draft – add, delete, fix, reword, etc. Then begin to rewrite. This will not be your final as it must be typed, but you’ll have something that is clear to type from.
