Cedardale Curriculum Night

Our Mission Statement O to inspire students and to help them achieve their intellectual, physical, artistic, and social potential in a bilingual environment. The school is a place where students feel secure and valued, and which nurtures and embraces the importance of the francophone culture..

Goal #1: To improve student oral French proficiency so students are able to communicate more efficiently and effectively solely in French.

Objective 1 : Students will be presented with authentic and motivating learning situations that will compel students to communicate in French.

Why? The motivation to learn and use a second language is not as strong as that of using one’s mother tongue, however, given that the goal for French Immersion in British Columbia is “to provide the opportunity for non-francophone students to become bilingual in English and French” (BC Ministry of Education, 2011) staff at Cedardale relish the opportunities to build French Oral Language.

How? Activities are sought in the school as well as outside the school to encourage French language use and to increase the students’ awareness of French culture and of the French presence in their milieu

Goal #2: Goal #2 To integrated an Inquiry-based approach into instruction and student learning.

Why? “Inquiry-based learning is a process where students formulate questions, investigate to find answers, build new understandings, meanings and knowledge, and then communicate their learning to others. In classrooms where teachers emphasize inquiry-based learning, students are actively involved in solving authentic (real-life) problems within the context of the curriculum and/or community. These powerful learning experiences engage students deeply.”

Objective #1 O With support, staff will plan and implement three trans-disciplinary Units of Inquiry. Professional-Development opportunities will be provided to ensure that Cedardale staff are able to collaborate with teachers that are more experienced and comfortable with the Inquiry model.
