Chapter 1A Classifying Living Things Lesson 1 Classification

Grouping Living Things Classification The act of grouping things using a set of rules **Examples: grocery store, library, animals

Grouping by Similarities & Differences Kingdom the largest group into which living things can be classified **Examples: Animals, Plants, Fungi, Protists, Monerans

The Five Kingdoms

Many-celled, feed on other living things Animals Many-celled, feed on other living things

Many-celled, make their own food Plants Many-celled, make their own food

Fungi have nuclei (control center), mostly many-celled, absorb food from other living things mushroom mold

Protists one celled, has a nucleus Algae

Moneran (mo – no) One cell, no nucleus bacteria

Moneran To the tune of Bingo There was a kingdom called moneran and it has no nucleus Moneran has no nucleus

Genus the second smallest group of classification **example: Ursus

Species the smallest group of classification; refers to its scientific name remember: S in species – S in smallest **example: Ursus arctos

Species To the tune of It's a Small World After All It's the smallest group of all It's the SPECIES

King Phillip Came Over For Good Spaghetti
