2 What is Classification? Classification - The process of grouping things based on their similarities

3 Why Do We Classify? Classifying enables us to study things easier. Taxonomy - the scientific study of how living things are classified

5 What did he do? Binomial Nomenclature - two Latin names are given to organisms –Written in italics and cursive –Genus - written in CAPITAL LETTERS –Species - written in lower case letters Example: cat - Felis domesticus

7 Domains Bacteria - unicellular, prokaryote Archaea - unicellular, prokaryote Eukarya - eukaryote Prokaryote - organism without a nucleus Eukaryote - organism with a nucleus Autotroph - makes own food (plant, bacteria) Heterotroph - finds own food (animals, fungi)
