Quetzalcoatl English I Louise S. McGehee School 2004 (Rich)

Origination Originated in Mesoamerica (in dark Green) Mostly worshiped in Teotihuacan He was born in Michatlauhco (Camargo)

Quetzalcoatl Originated as the Water god Feathered Serpent or Snake with Wings Picked up the name Ehectal and became the Wind god or god of Air Father was the Sun Mother was Mother Earth His human form was a white bearded warrior wearing earrings and having a jade pendant Has no special powers

Creation Myth Quetzalcoatl and his twin brother Xolotl rescued the human race. The humans before time were thought to be destroyed because the gods didn’t give them the power to reproduce. So, their bones laid in the Underworld. So, Quetzalcaotl went to the Underworld to collect them, and on his way back he tripped and broke the bones. He took the bones and ground them into dust, mixed them with his own blood, and then molded them in doll shapes. ( Les Aztèques)

Creation Myth continued… Since, the bones were broken, the newly shaped humans were in different shapes and sizes. Once finished with the bodies, he gave them the breath of life and taught them how to reproduce so the race can last. In order to protect his creation from dying out he also taught them astronomy, farming, music, technology, writing, the measurement of time, and not to cheat death. (McLeish) (ifrance)

Quetzalcaotl and Tezcatlipoca Myth Quetzalcoatl, known as the good god, and Tezcatlipoca, known as the evil god, were enemies of each other. Quetzalcoatl built a city called Tula and was currently ruling it. One day Tezcatlipoca went to Quetzalcoatl’s court and got him drunk. Once drunk Tezcatlipoca showed Quetzalcoatl his reflection. ( Colecciones 1996)

Quetzalcaotl and Tezcatlipoca Myth continued… Disturbed by his reflection, Quetzacaotl asked Tezcatlipoca if the people saw him like this and Tezcatlipoca lied and said yes and that the people wanted him to leave. So, Quetzalcoatl built himself a pyre and jumped into flames to destroy himself for his people. Once the structure of his body was burned, a flock of birds arose form the flames and in the middle of the birds was Quetzalcoatl’s heart. The birds flew directly in the sky and Quetzalcoatl became the morning Star. ( McLeish) (Dharma)
